2005-2012 original format vs 2013 improved format
Like a book but optimized for on-screen display, the colors make it NOT printer-friendly.

2015 edition
Black & white, now it is printer-friendly (although I believe that nobody will want to print this)

You may ask WTF is this… in the era of Excel and SQL databases.

Car Models Encyclopedia contains external car dimensions (length, width, height, wheelbase), weight, cargo space, and list of engines (displacement and horsepower). Each piece of text (Make titles, Model titles, Car class, Body text, etc) is a separate style in Word, easy to manipulate the appearance, changing formatting of one row will change all the rows in entire file.

It can be compared with the info boxes seen on Wikipedia in each car model page (this is a coincidence, when I started my own encyclopedia I did not had internet access and did not knew Wikipedia). It dates back from the childhood hobby for writing books in Word (although it was optimized for on-screen viewing).

Coverage: 1945-present with 99% completion for 1980s-present, for worldwide cars sold in European market (and few bonus cars not imported in Europe). See the list of manufacturers included.

Development history

In 2001-2003 I wrote an encyclopedia in Word with 2-4 pages per car model.

In 2003 I had Car Models List and The BIG Car Database. Two new files were started around 2005, Car Database List.DOC (sorted by manufacturer) and Car Database Timeline.XLS (sorted by class and year, for purpose of comparing how cars evolved in dimensions over last 60 years). Originally containing ONLY European cars, were posted on website in 2011, given for free.

I invested great efforts to add non-European cars in April 2012 and put on sale both files as one package.

The Word file was the “base”, being complete with all vehicles produced (1100 models counted), including every dimension change, having each car written in a standard format, 4-10 models per page, somewhat successor of an early encyclopedia done in 2001-2003 with one model spread on 2-4 pages, which was a MESS without a standard format.

The Excel had only the vehicles with dimensions available (~950 models estimated), it showed dimensions of original model launch, omitting possible dimension changes at various facelifts, to be clean-looking.

The package got several sales during 2012, when I noticed that the customers are companies buying the package for Excel tables rather than for reading Word documents.

In December 2012 I re-sorted the .XLS version alphabetically by manufacturer and added all vehicles from .DOC, even those with no dimensions available, making .XLS COMPLETE but messy-looking with some missing data in case of old cars (car specs for pre-1990 models are hard to find – don’t worry, over time I will find them and complete the empty fields).

I updated the .DOC too, until January 2013, reaching 1220 car models (same like in .XLS version as Jan 2013) on 160-page file… when I started questioning what is the purpose of a database in .DOC format?
Probably automobile enthusiasts may appreciate this Word encyclopedia, but the audience of website turned to be programmers and other professionals and not hobbyists.

The Excel version was named Car Models Database (or Car Body Specs Database between April-October 2013).
The Word version is now sold separately under name Car Models Encyclopedia at HALF PRICE.

In July 2013 I redesigned the encyclopedia, now each piece of data is on separate row, instead of original in-line paragraphs to save space on screen. The 160 pages became instantly 260 pages, 2-6 models per page.
A slow updating was started, and in October 2013 I released new version with 1430 car models on 320-page file.

One person complained that this .DOC is hard to read. Meantime many website visitors complained that the website itself is crowded, cluttered, etc, suggesting to split website paragraphs into smaller pieces and add additional spaces around. So I applied their suggestion for Car Encyclopedia too. Maybe the problem “hard to read” was not for being .DOC, but due to the style of writing data in in-line paragraphs?

I posted Word encyclopedia separately from Excel database, and resumed updating, exceeding 1500+ car models in late 2013, when I stopped because 1 year passed without any sale. I will concentrate on Excel files which generate sales constantly.

In May 2015 I done a 10-minute aesthetic change of Word file to align it with my new style of books.

Someone purchased encyclopedia in 2015 and another one in 2016, none of them answering when I emailed asking how they use this Word file.

Updates are ON HOLD until someone give me an actual use of this Word encyclopedia.

What use would have this Word encyclopedia?

In December 2012 I was thinking convert the above Word file into a web-based car encyclopedia, a blog with 1500+ posts, completed with car photos, tags by car classes, allowing filter and search. But soon after this customers told me that good websites store data in MySQL database, and allow car comparisons, reviews, etc, NOT blog-style posts, so I abandoned the idea of making a car blog, and making a MySQL-based website exceed my abilities, hiring developers cost money, how I can recover investment?

In 2013 I was thinking to sell the encyclopedia as e-book in PDF format, completed with images, but adding 1500+ images will make the file very big… is anyone willing to purchase such thing?

POLL

Do I should maintain Car Models Encyclopedia in Word?

Keep updating, I am interested to purchase a .DOC or .PDF for reading.
Stop wasting time updating a .DOC, nobody will ever pay even $1 for a Word file, you offer “Car Models Database” in Excel format with approximately same data, we can buy .XLS one.
I am interested in this .DOC but it should be provided FREE, for people to read / consult the car dimensions and engines available, while web developers can PAY for the .XLS table (note: free stuff will be updated once per year instead of every month like paid stuff).

Car Nameplates ListDownload SAMPLE: Car Nameplates List.xls.

Buy complete database + FREE updates for 1 year:

While Car Models List have separate row for each model generation (example Golf 1 to Golf 7) with production years indicated for each, and single row if a car is sold in multiple countries under different names, the Car Nameplates List have a single row for each nameplate regardless of how many models wore it, sometimes define totally different models (example: Ford Fusion is a mid-size sedan in North America and also a mini MPV in Europe), and separate row for each alternative name sold in various countries. Separate row is also for sister cars such as Fiat Bravo / Brava, VW Golf / Jetta.

Car Nameplates List is sold in 3 versions:

  • XLS original order from Car Models List (from mini cars to luxury cars, followed by sports cars, MPVs and ending with SUVs), used by me to add missing models.
  • XLS alphabetic order (you could sort yourself too).
  • CSV alphabetic with 2 files, one with one row per Make + Make ID, one with one row per model with Make ID, Make, Model, etc.

History

The idea of Car Nameplates List popped in March 2013, when a customer showed me an used cars classifieds website having a drop-down list of models. At that moment I was NOT aware that my Excel database can be used for this kind of web building. Funny: that drop-down list had many errors and duplicate models such Mercedes SLS, SLS-Class, SLS AMG, 3 rows for what is actually a single model. I offered him to create myself a Car Nameplates List without such stupidities, but he refused and purchased Car Models List instead.

I still made a SAMPLE of Car Nameplates List with 2 makes and put it in possible future projects waiting for a customer interested, saying that I can build full list in 3 days for 20 euro. For 2 years NOBODY showed any interest, while Car Models List continued to get sales.

In 2015 I posted Car Nameplates List in the product grid of main page. First customer interested came in November 2015 but did not left any email address where I could announce him that project is complete. A second customer came in January 2016. By this way I decided to start the project, I spend 5 days recompiling Car Models List into Car Nameplates List. I published for sale in February 2016, 2900 nameplates, 524 KB file.

One customer suggested adding a numerical ID for each make, and make a second table with Make and Make ID, and sell both as SQL files for making drop-down boxes on his website. DONE!

The plan was to start regular updates once it gets 10 sales, but by end-2016 only 5 people purchased Car Nameplates List, while Car Models List got about 40 sales. 4 people purchased in 2017. The project looked like a failure. Sales increased to 11 in 2018 so I decided to revive the project, but did not knew how long would have taken and priority was to update the more expensive databases with higher sale volume.

I done the first update in January 2019, took me 10 hours, side-by-side on screen with Car Models List, adding 430 nameplates, making a total of 3330 nameplates from 183 makes, 725 KB. Added what was launched last 3 years but also lots of nameplates from outside Europe and North America that were added in Car Models List during last 3 years of worldwide expansion.

Another update in May 2019, 3658 nameplates from 229 makes, 801 KB. I added over 40 minor manufacturers in Car Models List and Car Nameplates List.

Because in the recent updates I added too many minor brands / exotic cars that are seen more at museums and collectors than driving on roads, at May 2019 update I also added a column that allow you to delete easily the exotic brands, if you want to have a database with only cars commonly seen on roads.

Example of cars included and marked as minor brands: Cizeta-Moroder (1990s supercar with only 20 units produced), Messerschmitt (cheap 1950s bubble car, 15,000 units produced but most of them been scraped and are not driving anymore), Peel (1960s, 2 models, less than 100 units produced, but famous for Peel P50 which is listed in Guinness book of records as world’s smallest car).

Update December 2019, 3681 nameplates from 229 makes, 848 KB.

History

I created this database in 2016 to serve the numerous visitors from United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia that were coming on my website looking for a car database for their region.

Source of data: www.DriveArabia.com, I paid my programmer partner to make a standalone scraping application (exe file), the website was easy-to-scrap, having all cars accessible via links, but is weak in terms of amount of data. I told him to include 16 columns of technical specs. Scraping takes about 1h 30min.

Furthermore in late 2016 same programmer made an universal scraping application that can be used on many websites, but it was not producing data in the right format so I did not used it for this particular database.

In summer 2017 DriveArabia had a major redesign, making standalone scraping application useless. I used the universal scraper instead, configuring it to include all data from website, not just technical specs but also model overview, reviews, reliability, and image URL. Scraping also takes 1h 30min, but do not produce data in the right format, so now after each scraping need to manually manipulate data which takes few hours. In 2018 my programmer improved universal scraper so the manual work is no longer required, data comes in the right format from scraper, allowing me to update database as often customers wants.

DriveArabia do not have individual pages for each engine, but just for model. Model pages are identical for all years you select, all engines offered during whole model production period (not just the year you selected) are displayed in table format. Some models display 0-100 kph and top speed as ranges, this because the model have multiple body styles with different specifications, and the website do not show body styles separate.

At 2017 redesign DriveArabia (sadly) removed the field displaying all years a model was produced without changes, a must-have feature to distinguish where a generation ends and next one starts.

If you know other websites that I can scrap data from, with more detailed car specs, tell me!

Description & history

Started in 2005, originally a research-analysis to compare cars and study evolution in terms of dimensions, weight and engines. For example Golf 1 (3705 mm length, 1100-1800 cm³, 50-112 PS), vs Golf 5 (4204 mm length, 1400-3200 cm³, 75-250 PS). However, since started selling in 2012, its typical customers are car shipping companies pricing transport costs by car dimensions, or car cover manufacturers.

At least one customer bought this Car Body Specs Database (SURPRISE!) not for body specs, but just for list of car body types. Previously I was adding car models only when/if data of car dimensions was available, but since 2013 I choose as ultimate goal to add EVERY car manufactured after World War II, even if no dimensions are available, over time I may find dimensions and complete the table.

Car Models Database contains separate row for each car body style, showing basic data:

Car dimensions (length, width, height, wheelbase, cube) with 99% completion for 1980-present and 75% for 1945-1980.
Car weight range and cargo space with 99% completion for 1980-present.
Car engine range (displacement, horsepower and top speed), for 1980-present (except for cars not sold in Europe).

Coverage

Cars sold in Europe, european domestic models 1945-present, Asian imports 1970/1980-present, American imports 1990-present, for more details see List of car manufacturers and years included.

Bonus: some Asian cars not imported in Europe, for example Malaysian cars (Proton’s all 15 models, not just the two imported in continental Europe, Perodua’s 10 models, none imported in continental Europe but few imported in United Kingdom). Add-on with cars produced in India, Brazil and Argentina (added during 2013).

This is NOT a database of Latin America / India market. I guarantee completion for European market ONLY. Indians and Latin Americans can buy European database + add-on of vehicles produced locally, delete yourself the vehicles not imported in your country and request me to add if there is any additional foreign models available in your country but not in European database!

Source of data: AutoKatalog for 1980s-present (99% data completion and accuracy guaranteed), and Wikipedia for older automobiles (expect some mess and missing data in pre-1980s). All data written manually in Excel, making an original product “Made by Teoalida”.

Sorting order: alphabetic by make, followed by class from mini to luxury cars, followed by model from old to new, followed by body style. You are advised to NOT change sorting order for example do not sort models alphabetically.

This vehicle database focus on model only and breakdown for body type (sedan, wagon, coupe, convertible, etc). There are NO list of car engines. For breakdown by individual engines, see Car Models & Engines Database.

List of car makes included

Mainstream makes: AC Cars, Alfa Romeo, Alpine, Alvis, ARO, Asia Motors, Aston Martin, Audi, Austin / Rover, Austin-Healey, Autobianchi, Auto-Union, Bentley, BMW, Bond, British Leyland (Austin, MG, Mini, Morris, Riley, Rover, Triumph, Vanden Plas, Wolseley), Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet USA, Chrysler USA, Chrysler Europe / Simca / Talbot (France) / Sunbeam / Hillman / Talbot (UK), Citroën, Dacia, Daewoo / Chevrolet Korea, DAF, Daihatsu, De Tomaso, DeLorean, Dodge, Ferrari, Fiat, Ford Europe, FSO, GAZ (Volga), Honda, Hummer, Hyundai, IFA (Trabant, Wartburg, Barkas), Infiniti, Innocenti, ISO, Isuzu, Iveco, Izh, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Lada, Lamborghini, Lancia, Land Rover, Lexus, Lotus, Maserati, Matra, Maybach, Mazda, Mercedes, Mini, Mitsubishi, Morgan, Moskwitch, Nissan, NSU, Oltcit, Opel, Otosan, Perodua, Peugeot, Pontiac, Porsche, Proton, Reliant, Renault, Rolls-Royce, Saab, Samsung, Santana, Seat, Skoda, Smart, SsangYong, Standard-Triumph, Subaru, Suzuki, Tatra, Tesla, Tofas, Toyota, TVR, UAZ, Vauxhall, Volkswagen, Volvo, Zastava, ZAZ.

Bonus minor makes: Artega, Bitter, Bristol, Bugatti, Caterham, Cizeta, Donkervoort, Felber, Fisker, Ginetta, GTA Spano, Gumpert, Isdera, Jensen, Koenigsegg, LuAZ, Lynx, McLaren, Messerschmitt, Monica, Monteverdi, Pagani, Panther, Saleen, Shelby SuperCars, Venturi, Wiesmann, ZIL (producing less than 100 cars per year).

List as September 2017. Italic makes to be added in next releases. Additional minor makes may be added in the future.

Discontinued: Timeline database

Download SAMPLE: Car Models Database Timeline version.XLS

Same rows, but sorted by class and year instead of alphabetic by make, useful for my personal research but difficult to maintain and check for missing models.

This was the only database format since 2005 to December 2012, when I re-sorted database alphabetically and sold both versions in same package but the timeline had a lag in updates. I updated the Timeline version and offered of sale both versions separately at main yearly update of November 2013, but due to customers preference for alphabetic version, I no longer updated Timeline version since May 2014 and removed from sale at end of 2014.

Timeline version’s purpose is to visualize car evolution over years, and in 1 year NOBODY bought for this purpose.

Car Models Database Timeline

This database will undergo a complete redesign in the future

I was thinking in March 2016 to offer a major update for Car Models Database after Car Models & Engines Database will be fully expanded to 1970, I will recheck every car and add correct dimensions, weight and engine range from the expanded bigger database. Until that, I will offer minor updates with new cars added and with dimensions only.

During 2017 I expanded Car Models & Engines to 1975 using AutoKatalog books, leaving 1970-1975 to be added at later stage, but meantime I created additional car databases for other continents that sold so well making me to lose interest for this original European database. www.ADAC.de which was once time ago 1990-present only, was redesigned in February 2017 adding car images and during 2017 was expanded backwards to 1950, then in March 2018 I added commercial vehicles in Car Models & Engines Database sourcing them from ADAC.

In 2019 I realized that AutoKatalog have NO advantage over ADAC so is better to recreate Car Models Database sourcing data from ADAC instead. By this way, the future database will have production years as month/year instead of just year and will include car images and an unique ID number for each row.

This is a possible SAMPLE: Car Models Database new proposed format.xls. Feel free to suggest changes.

Some things are yet to be decided:

  • Cars that had a mid-life facelift that changed external dimensions only slightly do not have a separate row, instead they have in Notes column “Length X mm after year Y”, would be better if I make separate row for every slight variation of dimensions, or this will make unnecessarily too many rows?
  • Make & Model & Platform controversy: since I started this database in 2003, until I published on website and started selling in 2012, there was a single column “Car name”, starting from 2012 I made columns Make and Model, since 2014 I made 4 columns Make, Model-Platform, Model, Platform. May I know how are you using these 4 columns?
  • I am questioning if this is the best format or I can improve it even further, for example I am thinking to remove (facelift) from model names, and add instead production years to differentiate pre- and post-facelift models
  • If you have any better proposal, let me know!

If you want body styles, trims and more details, see instead Year-Make-Model-Trim-Specs but it does not go beyond 1990.

Database coverage

Complete for World War II – present. New and used cars, light trucks, SUVs and vans, basically all vehicles that can be driven with car standard driving license, sold in North America. I added notes regarding cars specific to Canada and not sold in United States, but I do not know which cars sold in United States were sold or not in Canada.

Database also include 234 vintage cars MY 1917-1942, if there is a name connection with post-war models, example Chrysler Imperial (since 1926) and Chevrolet Suburban (since 1933), but it is not and will never be complete for pre-war period.

Last release: May 2019. including 317 “2020 models”, see Changelog & version history.

Source of data

Mainly Wikipedia, which is pretty accurate for cars produced in USA and for cars imported from Japan, but not for cars imported from Europe, so to get higher accuracy I also verified with the highly-reliable Edmunds (unfortunately 1990-present only), eBay Motors (unreliable, may model years that actually do not exist), Nada Guides (some missing models and messed up names, for example missing Suzuki after 1997 and incompleteness of Porsche 1998-2010, but best source of data for 1940-1990), and CarListDB.com (one of my competitors in data providing that was closed in 2015).

There is some confusion at cars imported before 1990 regarding the model years each model was available for sale, in case of contradictory info I added notes in Excel table “possible non-existent model year, existent on CarListDB, non-existent on NadaGuides” so you have guarantee that you get a car and truck database with NO missing models.

Updating procedure

I do one main yearly update: in May 2019 I added in advance all “2020 Models” that may be launched during 2019, by duplicating “2019 models” unless there was an announcement on Wikipedia that 2019 is the last year for that model (I manually checked each car model on Wikipedia). I may have added in database models that may never launch. I do additional minor updates and corrections at random times of year.

This procedure save my time from checking each manufacturer website every month, save your hassle of requesting updates every month, and guarantee NO missing cars!

Description

I created this UK car database in January 2019 after multiple people requested me to do this job. For long time I avoided spending additional effort to make an UK car database because I already had the Car Models & Engines Database for whole Europe that has been purchased by many people in UK without problems, and the more detailed German Car Database was not selling well.

But… a small number of people wanted a more detailed database than European one (which have 1 row per body / engine / drivetrain combination, ignoring trims / equipment versions). Some did purchased German one but the ones from UK wanted an UK-specific one. The UK website turned much easier to scrap than originally expected, easier than other German and American websites I have scraped data from. I feel sorry for not creating this UK car database earlier!

List of updates:

2389 models, 80406 versions – 20 January 2019, initial scrap, beta version. 45 columns.
2389 models, 80485 versions – 3 February 2019, re-scraped to fix the incorrect car prices in initial scrap.
2383 models, 81501 versions – 28 March 2019.
2418 models, 81873 versions – 7 May 2019, removed unit of measurement after values, made multiple tables and VLOOKUP formulas in order to add model production years (different than version production years) and image URL from small database into big database, also status (production / discontinued) for purpose of selling a “new cars only” package with discount. 52 columns.
101 makes, 2439 models, 83314 versions – 5 September 2019.
101 makes, 2439 models, 83430 versions – 16 September 2019.
101 makes, 2467 models, 84532 versions – 7 December 2019.
102 makes, 2481 models, 84966 versions – 14 February 2020.

Description

I offered a car database for USA market since 2014, named Year-Make-Model-Trim-Specs, but it does not have several things that some customers were looking for, for example MSRP (manufacturer’s suggested retail price) until April 2018 update.

I discovered TheCarConnection in October 2017 when a customer interested in MSRP suggested me to do scraping from this website to sell him a database with car prices, then in November 2017 another customer asked me for specific technical specs so I offered to sell him same database, re-scraped to include all specifications. After selling privately to 2 customers, both interested in 2017-2018 models only, I decided to scrap all 1990-2018 models and publish database on website so everyone can purchase.

Accuracy notes

If you care about accuracy you are advised to buy Year-Make-Model-Trim-Specs (the first American car database I made, based on Edmunds.com), unless you need certain data available only in the 230 columns package of the Second American Car Database.

Second American car database, based on TheCarConnection.com, is sold “as it is” without corrections or additions, because any changes done will be lost at next update. While specifications for each individual car are pretty accurate, filtering cars of a specific class may be a trouble, because it contains multiple values having same meaning: “midsize car”, “midsize cars”, “mid-size cars”. Model hierarchy was slightly messed, for example Jetta is 1996-2005, 2009-2014, 2017-2018, New Jetta is 1999, Jetta Sedan 2002-2016, etc (they corrected this mess in mid-2019).

Second American car database lacked a constant unique ID (until mid-2019) and they have a habit to change URLs of old cars, merging cars with too similar specs thus deleting some,  etc. In mid-2019 they deleted nameplates discontinued before 2015 (details below). This makes me worried about certain customers who integrate other data with my database, I am not sure if these changes pose them a problem on long term…

Year-Make-Model-Trim-Specs beside nearly perfect specs accuracy, I manually-built URLs of car models with unique IDs thus it is constant over time and nothing is delete. I also improved model hierarchy, corrected errors and added additional data not included in the original website.

List of car makes

Acura, Alfa Romeo, AM General, Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Coda, Daewoo, Dodge, Eagle, Ferrari, FIAT, Fisker, Ford, Genesis, Geo, GMC, Honda, HUMMER, Hyundai, INFINITI, Isuzu, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Lamborghini, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Lotus, Maserati, Maybach, Mazda, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, Mercury, MINI, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Oldsmobile, Panoz, Plymouth, Pontiac, Porsche, Ram, Rolls-Royce, Saab, Saturn, Scion, smart, Subaru, Suzuki, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen, Volvo.

List of updates

Each update involve re-scraping all makes, models, years and trim, the job takes about 50 hours at speed of 3 seconds per page.

TheCarConnection was originally 1997-present. As March 2018 they added specifications for 1996 models and also 1990-1995 models without specifications (only model names and price). I do not know if in the future, they will add specifications for pre-1996 cars too.

1136 models, 7224 model years, of which 6608 with specs, ? with trims, 46140 trims, as December 2017
1191 models, 8390 model years, of which 8074 with specs, 6644 with trims, 46804 trims, as 12 March 2018, published 18 March.
1210 models, 8651 model years, of which 8313 with specs (? full specs), 56363 trims (? full specs) as 20 September 2018.
1215 models, 8694 model years, of which 8313 with specs (? full specs), 56369 trims (? full specs) as 26 December 2018 (the source website did not added more specs in 3 months?)
1225 models, 8762 model years, of which 8439 with specs (7008 full specs), 57181 trims (49381 full specs) as 1 Feb 2019.
1229 models, 8790 model years, of which 8454 with specs (7023 full specs), 57312 trims (49512 full specs) as 28 March 2019.
1235 models, 8877 model years, of which 8547 with specs (7116 full specs), 58006 trims (50209 full specs) as 4 June 2019.

In mid-2019 TheCarConnection deleted pages of all model nameplates  discontinued before 2015. We can still see specs of 1990 Dodge Grand Caravan https://www.thecarconnection.com/overview/dodge_grand-caravan_1990 because a new model with same name is still in production today, but we cannot see anymore specs of Dodge Caravan (non-Grand) because this nameplate was discontinued in 2007! Strange decision to delete data for discontinued nameplates! Wasn’t TheCarConnection supposed to contain ALL cars that have been sold in United States since 1990 to present?

My idea was to scrap all cars and add 2019-2020 models from recent scrap over the 1990-2018 models from June scrap… I ran scraper again in September and early December without finding any significant number of cars added. I noticed that number of cars changed significantly in December so I ran scraper again on 18 December, to find a lot more 2020 models. But number of 2018 and 2019 models decreased, it means that TheCarConnection is not only updating with new cars but also doing changes in old cars, deleting / merging 2 similar trims into one, so how do I should combine files?

I decided at December 2019 update to provide separate files for June and December updates, leaving customers to combine. Depending by customers feedback, I will decide how to combine, if should provide combined files from my side.

521 models, 5629 model years, of which 5449 with specs, 44507 trims, as 16 Sep 2019
525 models, 5696 model years, of which 5460 with specs, 44558 trims, as 07 Dec 2019
554 models, 5785 model years, of which 5661 with specs, 46108 trims, as 15 Dec 2019
538 models, 5786 model years, of which 5660 with specs, 46107 trims, as 24 Dec 2019

Description & notes

Australia Car Database was the MOST DIFFICULT project I ever done. First time made in June 2017 using Octoparse.com, a FREE scraper slow and buggy, had to run in small batches of 1000-2000 cars and took 2 weeks to complete project, 96 columns, without colors and features which were not scrap-able with Octoparse.

In mid-2017 source website removed META tags used by me to obtain Make and Model name separately from full car name, also removed a column highly appreciated by my customers: VIN. Due to this reason it was not worth my effort to re-scrap all cars, I was updating database every 3 months by scraping only last year of cars, manually splitting Make and Model, leaving older cars unchanged. I removed “trade-in prices” columns because it was variable over time.

In February 2019 database been re-made by an Australian student using Python, which took only 2 days to scrap all, he was able to add colors and features too, he gave me a BETA scraper with errors and without Colors and Optional Features, which I reported and he fixed afterwards but without giving me final scraper, he setup scraper to run on his server and the agreement was to give me monthly updates by scraping all 1960-2019. Everything looked perfect, his scraper included Colors and Optional Features too, but in April 2019 he became uncontactable and server was closed, leaving me and my customers with no updates.

While I could use again Octoparse, I tried to find another Python programmer, and in July 2019 I found one in India. He impressed me when he said that have over 80 databases created in Python, giving me few samples, I gave him incomplete scraper from Australian student to fix errors.

The Indian programmer turned to be an idiot, scammer, liar, abusing my lack of knowledge of Python + the fact that I was too busy to carefully check his code. He wasted my time for 4 months, providing scraper with errors which I had to test and report errors, and asked me to pay extra $ over the price we initialy agreed (NO legitimate programmer would charge extra money for fixing his own errors). In September he offered to sell me 80+ databases for 100 EURO, which I paid, and in October when I was less busy and I checked them, I realized that at least 90% of them were open data available for free download on various sites (he was LYING that created himself). After providing 2 temporary updates with 2019 models in September and November, I completed a fresh scrap of all 1960-2019 models on 17 December 2019. Now I CAN provide updates anytime you want!

Due to typos in codes made by Indian programmer, 11 columns have no data (is about columns with rare data available for less than 5% of cars). Also Full model name column is WRONG for some cars.

Even if I never coded in Python before, took me only few hours to fix myself his code that he did not fixed in 4 months: I fixed codes that generated wrong car names and empty columns, except Colors and Optional Equipment (Indian programmer want another $100 for this and promise doing in 3 days. Are you fucking serious? Any skilled programmer wouldn’t spend more than 1 hour on this! I already waited for 4 months).

Now I need to scrap again all 100,000 cars which would take 20 days.

Anyone who know Python and is willing to help, please contact me!

Description

A lot of people asked me for a JDM car database, but I was facing trouble because most websites from Japan are in Japanese language while they needed English specifications. In March 2019 a customer told me about one Japanese website in English and after this I found 3 more similar websites, I choose the best one, coded a scraper and published database for sale in April 2019.

This database include ONLY car models sold in Japanese domestic market (including foreign models sold here) and target people from Japan as well as people from LHD countries in Asia and Africa who import used cars from Japan.

This database does NOT include car models made in Japan exclusively for export, for example Acura and Infiniti (Japanese brands aimed primarily for US market but sold also in Europe and Middle East), or example of Toyota models sold in US market but NOT sold in Japan: 4Runner, C-HR, Cressida, ECHO, Highlander, Matrix, Paseo, Previa, Sequoia, Sienna, T100, Tacoma, Tundra, Venza, Yaris. For these car models you can buy one my American databases.

Coverage

Car sold in Europe. Database being based on AutoKatalog (german car magazine) have 100% coverage for cars sold in Germany which is the biggest car market of Europe. 99% of cars sold in any European country are also sold in Germany. I also added unique cars sold only in UK, communist cars sold only in Eastern bloc, as well as special cars with 2.0 liter engine to comply with Italian tax system.

If you are outside Europe, you can check list of car models included in Excel file and report missing models (sold in your country but not in Europe) so I can add their data if available, but I cannot guarantee that I can add all.

Description & history

I started this automobile database in 2003, from personal interest. In late 2003 I standardized the table at 11 columns of technical specs and from December 2003 to April 2004 I added about 2800 model versions.

I sourced data from AutoCatalog 1997, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 (from Auto Motor & Sport magazine), and AutoSpecial 2000, 2001, 2002 (from Burda magazine), in October 2004 I also bought AutoCatalog 2005 so I started to update my database. So the database included initially most cars produced since mid-1990s to present. I launched my first FINAL edition in January 2005, it had 3600 model versions, of which 3000 from Europe.

AutoKatalog provide 40+ columns of data, but personally I was not interested in so much data, and 1024×768 screen limited my abilities. The 11-column format was inspired from these auto magazines displaying 7 columns (cylinders, displacement, power, torque, 0-100 kmph, top speed, fuel consumption) and separate table for car dimensions. Additional 4 columns (body, doors, engine placement, drivetrain) were added from my research interest.

I was updating my database constantly, after buying each year AutoCatalog 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009. The 2008 edition had 6000 model versions of which 4800 are from Europe. Sadly, AutoCatalog is no longer published in Romania since 2009, leaving database in hiatus. I done a small update in 2010 and also added few pre-1990 cars with data sourced from Wikipedia and other websites, for BMW, Lamborghini, Mercedes and Porsche I was able to find sufficient data to expand my database to WW2, reaching 7800 models from 57 brands.

In 2011 I published previews my car databases on my personal website and in 2012 realized that I can do a business by selling it to various companies and web developers.

In November 2012 I found on eBay a collection of german AutoKatalog for 1991-2013 and revived the car database from hiatus. Had to add last 4 years of cars and reached over 10700 models. Adding more early 1990s models and improving the models sourced initially from Wikipedia, raised the database to 12000 models (as January 2013) from 78 brands, covering 1990-present.

After people starting contacting me, I had to do few changes to make the automobile database suitable for the unexpected audience, for example: added 2 new columns Make and Model before the full model name (necessary for web developers making drop-down lists), added fuel type (suggested by a customer who wanted to filter cars by fuel), added number of seats, etc).

In February 2013 I bought from eBay more german AutoKatalog for 1983-1990 too, planning to include in my database all cars launched after 1983 or produced until at least 1990. I kept buying AutoKatalogs until 2014, completing collection for 1970-2014 (45 books). In 2014 the database had over 14000 models from 80+ brands, starting year vary from 1970 to 1990 depending by car make.

The vehicle database proved insufficient for certain customers who were demanding more data per car, especially car tire dimensions were demanded by numerous customers (tire shops), while several customers wanted to combine Car Models & Engines Database with Car Models Database (to have both engines and car dimensions). I expanded the vehicle database from 14 to 22 columns, adding quickly the car dimensions from Car Models Database and started a slow process of adding car tire size. But new customers demanded additional data such as transmission, so I had to do again every car.

In May 2014 I bought a 24″ 1920×1200 monitor to replace the 17″ crap, this encouraged me to engage in creating bigger databases. However, I was questioning if will worth my time spending 500+ hours to include 40+ columns of data from AutoKatalog books. I posted a message on site inviting people to contact me and make a price offer if they are interested in expanding database to 45+ columns. By end-2014, a single person showed interest.

In 2014 I halted adding classic cars and stated expanding the automobile database to 45+ columns in my spare time. When launched for sale the expanded database in October 2015 with 99% completion for 1990-present, I was surprised to see the high number of people willing to pay ~500 euro for such great database. But most people do not need so many data and the 7-column database (60% cheaper) remains best-selling. 1990-present package is the best selling, due to this reason, expanding 1970-1990 cars to 45-columns was not a priority.

Of course certain customers demand new specialty data that is not available in AutoKatalog and sometimes nowhere. I cannot satisfy everyone.

AutoKatalog magazine was surprisingly discontinued in 2014, so starting from 2015 I am sourcing new car data from ADAC Datenbank. ADAC do have separate row for each transmission, trim and equipment level, thus having too many rows for each engine. Every few months I am scraping ADAC website then use my personal knowledge to select one row per unique engine and copy-paste the data into my database, to match the format of the former AutoKatalog. This keeps my car database an original product and not a copy of any existing website, thus you can use it for your website without worrying about a copyright claim from another website.

In 2016 I resumed backward expansion and reached 99% completion for 1986-present. In summer 2017 I spent another 200 hours to add 1200 additional cars from 1975-1986 period, and together with updates with new cars, the database exceeded 20000 model versions. In next phase I will add 1970-1975 cars too. The cars from 1970-1986 added in database prior to 2014 remain in 22 column format, waiting to be expanded to 45+ columns in my spare time.

The ultimate database will have 99% completion for 1970-present. That is almost 50 years of history of automobile!

Years accuracy notes: AutoKatalog DO NOT provide years of production for each engine version so the years shown in databases are not sourced but rather generated based on what yearly issues of AutoKatalog each car appears in. Model production year are sourced from Wikipedia. AutoKatalog is published each year in September, it sometimes shows the car models that will be launched 1-2 months in advance, but not always. For example: Audi A4 was launched in November 1994, after the publication of AutoKatalog 1995 in September 1994, and was included for first time in AutoKatalog 1996, so I wrote in my database shows 1994-2001 for main model and 1995-XXXX for engine versions. At that time, without being aware of web scraping technology, this was the BEST I could do. I hope that this is not an issue for you.

Some customers gave me suggestions or additional requests:

  • Add an unique ID that facilitate integrating updates in existing database (for people who integrate my database with their own data so cannot simply delete old database and upload new database).
  • Correct inaccurate years and add month of production.
  • Add engine codes.
  • Add car images.

The German Database and UK Database made via web scraping already have unique identifiers, production period with month/year and car images, but not engine codes. Recompiling these things into the format of Car Models & Engines Database, would take additional effort of manual work and the number of sales may not increase.

I started web scraping in 2015 and by 2017 I realized that most people do not care about buying someone’s original manual work and prefer buying databases scraped from other websites, some people ask me specifically to scrap data from certain website, despite of potential copyright issues.

Due to this reason I decided to create additional databases for other continents and no longer invest additional effort in expanding this manually-made European database, and reduce update frequency. Each update takes about 20-30 hours of manual work to add new cars, not counting corrections for old cars. For comparison, the UK Database takes about 24 hours of running scraping software in background and less than 1 hour of manual work, and all old records are updated, giving me a higher revenue per hour of work compared with manually updating Car Models & Engines Database. Despite of this, Car Models & Engines Database remained second best-selling database in 2018, after American Year-Make-Model-Trim-Specs, probably because the German and UK ones have too many rows for each engine, separate row for each trim / equipment level, which most people do not need.

A possible solution is to strip off German database and leave only 1 row per each engine? Your suggestions are welcome!

Source of data

AutoKatalog

Primarily AutoKatalog, the german car magazine published since 1957 every year in September, one of most reputable car publications in the world, and ADAC. AutoKatalog shows each year cars currently in production, with no years of production indicated. The years in my database are generated by the books the car appears in, for example if a car appears in AK 2000, 2001, 2002 I indicated year 1999-2002.

The original database (2003-2014): initially it included only data that I was personally interested, engine and performance data. In a period of 2005-2006 I was deciding when to make a new row by checking performance data, which have sometimes variations from year to year despite that engine is the same, thus causing some duplicates in engine data.

The current database (2014-present): I made separate rows for each yearly issue of AutoKatalog, but for time economy, in the first stage I filled up only the rows of the first year the car appears in AutoKatalog (or second year, if the first year looks pre-launch data). There are 2 columns of production years, which I filled for just one of the rows for each year of AutoKatalog, then filter up database by deleting rows with empty production years, producing final database having only one row per each engine-body-drivetrain combination, with no duplicates, ignoring the variations in performance data.

Data accuracy notes

AutoKatalog itself does have errors, but having myself high experience in cars and data analysis, I have spotted numerous errors and input correct data. However some data remains possibly wrong because I do not know what would be correct values.

The most important data, such as engine and dimensions, are 99.99% accurate. Less accurate data are the following: performance data, where are often variations such as +/- 0.1 litres in fuel consumption between yearly issues of AutoKatalog, suspension type: sometimes it indicate double wishbone on one year and multilink in another year, can’t know which is correct, and tire size (especially the speed indicator is different from yearly issues of AutoKatalog).

Do note that nobody is perfect, 100% accuracy is impossible, but I believe that my manually hand-made car database is the most accurate vehicle database ever existed on internet, given by the comments from my customers who previously bought car databases from other sources which appears to be crawled using automatic software, including junk data, and no human is ever checking for errors.

if you want to counter-check my accuracy, I advise you to check against German websites. Expect small differences for certain cars when checking against websites from other countries, due to the bad sources of data that most websites uses.

The BIG Car Database

Do I shoud add 1945-1980 cars considering lack of detailed data, or focus on new cars?

Add older cars regardless how little and unnaccurate data is available
Don’t add older cars unless some accurate detailed data is available (minimum engine size, horsepower, and production years for each engine), to not damage the overall level of 99% data completion for the main columns
We do not need cars older than 20-30 years. Rather use your free time to add more details about 2000s cars

Poll – abbreviations

The reason for which I use abbreviations is because I sourced data from books which also use abbreviated due to limited amount of paper space, and because when I started this European database in 2003 I had an 1024×768 screen, that’s why I made it in 12 columns only. Since 2014 I have a 24″ 1920×1200 screen and this allowed me to expand database to 45 columns, my screen is still not big enough as the database would require a 27″ 2560×1440 screen to display completely, so I choose to hide columns when adding new data. However, after I enter all data from AutoKatalog books going back to 1970, there will be no more reason to have a database that fit in screen width, as the updates with new cars are done via copy-pasting and not manual typing. The databases I made for other continents, America and India, source data from websites which do not have limitations of a printed book, so they use full words, and I wonder if should do the same for European database.

Should I use abbreviations or full names? (in columns body type, drivetrain, injection type, turbocharger, suspension, brakes, fuel type)

Poll – tires

How I should indicate tire size for sport cars with different front and rear tires?

one column saying “245/35-305/30 R 20” (this is original AutoKatalog format)
one column saying “front 245/35 R 20 / rear 305/30 R 20”
two columns “tires” and “rear tires (if different than front)”, leave second column empty for 90%+ of cars which have same tires front and back

If you are a business working globally rather than in a specific country, or working in some other country than the countries covered by my standard car databases, you may be looking for a global car database.

But… this is not really possible. Car specifications vary depending by country of sale for models having same name, and for accuracy reasons, a car database should be specific to cars SOLD in one country, or with some compromise of quality, to one continent.

Over years I gained reputation for providing most accurate and complete databases, because I offer separate car database for each market of sale, containing ALL and ONLY car models sold locally and data is formatted according tastes of local people. Car Models & Engines Database collect data from European car dealers while Year-Make-Model-Trim-Specs collect data from American car dealers.

Some people asked “I need a database containing European cars (BMW, Skoda, etc) and Japanese cars (Nissan, Toyota, etc), we have all them in Brazil“. You CANNOT buy a single database of “cars made in Japan” because they vary depending by market of sale.

This is Toyota lineup for America
Toyota car models

and Toyota lineup for Asia
Toyota car models

Example: Toyota sold the following models in calendar year 2015 / US MY 2016:

  • In United States: 4Runner, Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Land Cruiser, Mirai, Prius, Prius c, Prius v, RAV4, Sequoia, Sienna, Tacoma, Tundra, Yaris.
  • In Europe: Auris, Avensis, Aygo, Corolla, GT86, Hilux, iQ, Land Cruiser, Mirai, Prius, Prius+, RAV4, Urban Cruiser, Verso, Verso-S, Yaris.
  • In Australia: 86, Aurion, Camry, Corolla, FJ Cruiser, Fortuner, Hiace, Hilux, Kluger, Land Cruiser, Land Cruiser Prado, Prius, Prius C, Prius V, RAV4, Rukus, Tarago, Yaris.
  • In India: Camry, Corolla, Etios, Fortuner, Innova, Land Cruiser, Land Cruiser Prado, Prius.
  • In whatever other country: possible other models.

Furthermore, there are several distinct cars named Toyota Corolla E120 (2000-2007):

  • Corolla sold in Europe is offered in hatchback, saloon, estate versions, with engines 1.4 (97 PS), 1.6 (110 PS), 1.8 turbo (192, 224 PS), 1.4 diesel (90 PS), 2.0 diesel (90, 110, 116 PS).
  • Corolla sold in North America is offered only in saloon version, with engines 1.8 (130, later 126 PS) and 1.8 turbo (170, later 164 PS).
  • Corolla sold in Australia is offered in hatchback, saloon, estate versions, with engines 1.8 (136, later 126 PS) and 1.8 turbo (192 PS).
  • Another Corolla is sold in Japanese domestic market with narrower body to comply with compact size tax regulation.
  • Additional different-specs Corollas are sold in Asia, Africa, Latin America, etc.

The ONLY type of database that CAN cover multiple markets (without risking accuracy) are Car Models List and Car Nameplates List, this was possible because these two do not contain engines, dimensions or any other specifications, but just model naming and production years.

A couple of customers choose to purchase multiple databases from me. I did not asked everyone how they use data, but I advise you to make separate sections on your website for each region. Do not mix up my multiple car databases, or you will end up in a mess that will displease any customer.

There are several websites like www.carfolio.com having worldwide cars, which I could make a script to scrap data and create an Excel database, but I do not do this because data quality will be a disaster.

There are also data providers like www.carqueryapi.com selling apparently a worldwide database but you should be careful in purchasing from them because their database is not complete for any given market. Some of my happy customers informed me that bought previously CarQueryAPI and had a major disappointment, missing models even from American and European markets, new models are added with delay of few years after they been launched, some model names are lowercase while others uppercase, certain values missing for random cars, etc. They bought from me afterwards and turned happy. Sadly, there are also people coming on my website and chatting with me then buying from CarQueryAPI just because is cheaper or website is simpler… stupid people who take cheap price over quality!

Model year (America) vs production year (rest of world)

North American car market is tightly regulated by government, all car models sold here are organized by Model Years. Most important, two successive models DO NOT share same Model Year (with few exceptions). Traditionally car models launched in second half of year are considered Model Year of next year, but legally manufacturers are allowed to launch “2017 Model” starting from 2 January 2016. Every year, they launch the “next year model”, even if the car is unchanged from previous year. New trims also appear in middle of model year.

Europe (and rest of world) do not have officially a car model year system, the year of a particular car is used only informally, and it’s the calendar year. So a car model launched in December 2016 is still a 2016 model. European car websites should show Make – Model – production years (as a range, no individual years).

I have seen some cheap-made websites targeting Europe but using drop-down vehicle list with each year on separate row, but since Europe do not have regulated Model Year, they used each calendar year in which a car has been manufactured. This is WRONG and leads to errors and confusion, in the year of model replacement, their list include both old and new models or just one of them at random.

Check yourself ebay.com/motors and ebay.co.uk/motors, see the difference? This makes combination virtually impossible, unless you adapt American database to European / rest of world format, which is not on the taste of American customers.

Americans doing their business in Europe or worldwide, argued with me saying that my European database is WRONG. Actually it is CORRECT for us. Me too, I considered the american system strange and wrong, until 2013.

More differences between Europe and America markets

From 1970s to 1990s many European and Japanese models sold in US had bigger bumpers, getting few extra inches in length compared with same models sold in rest of world.

Models are sold in US with less engine choices, usually top of range. Example: the 2007-2012 BMW 3-Series E90 have versions 328i, 335i, 335d, M3, while in Europe the versions are 318i, 320i, 325i, 330i, 335i, 316d, 318d, 320d, 325d, 330d, 335d, M3.

Sometimes US engines do not exist in rest of world. Example: VW Golf 6 is sold in US with a 2.5 liters 5 cylinders 170 PS engine which do not exists in Europe where all engines are 4 cylinders, ranging from 1.4 to 2.0 liters turbo, 80 – 200 PS.

US measure horsepower according SAE rules, usually getting slightly higher power than measured in European DIN standard.

US EPA measure fuel efficiency as miles per gallon, Europe measure in liters per 100 km. Conversion is theoretically possible, but due to different testing procedure, any given car tested in US will eat 10-20% more gas than when tested in Europe, making comparison difficult. Read more: fuel economy testing procedure.

Don’t trust any database claiming to be 100% complete worldwide!

European car market is 99%+ similar within European Union except United Kingdom and Ireland, and 90-95% similar for all 50 European countries. Eastern Europe have few additional cars produced locally, plus Russia gets few additional Asian cars which are not available in Western Europe, all them being included in my European database. United Kingdom car market is different by having less cars available, because not every manufacturer bother to produce cars in right-hand drive, also UK produce few additional cars sold only locally, again included in my European database.

Asia, Africa and Latin America car markets may be 60-80% similar with European market. If you do not have other options and don’t care about accuracy, buy European Database and tell me what other cars are available in your country, eventually delete the excess cars that are not sold in your country.

North American car market is unique. Most vehicles sold in US & Canada are not sold anywhere else. Many vehicles are sold with different specs in Europe and US even if they wear same name.

I offer Car Models List Worldwide including all models sold in Europe and North America and models sold in local market of non EU/US manufacturers, such as Japanese domestic market for Japan manufacturers (after a big effort in 2014). However it will be NEVER complete for all of the 200+ countries in the world, it DO NOT include cars manufactured in a given country and sold somewhere else but not in Europe, USA, neither in their own country’s market.

If do you need a worldwide database more detailed than a simple Make / Model list, things get very… COMPLEX. Car specs vary from one market to another. NOBODY can make a worldwide / global vehicle database for every 200+ countries in the world, at a reasonable accuracy.

The problem is that Japan and South Korea export SAME cars under dozens of different names in various countries. If this was not worse enough, same name is sometimes used in multiple countries for unrelated cars. For example: the Samsung SM3 produced in Korea is also sold in Mexico as Renault Scala and in Russia as Nissan Almera, unrelated with the well-known Japanese Nissan Almera sold all over Europe until 2007. This Russian Almera and its years (and dozens of other similar name changes) are NOT included in Car Models List. Ford do the same, see Ford Escort (Europe) and Ford Escort (North America).

People outside Europe and America have trouble finding a database suitable for their country

I got a customer from Arab world saying “I am looking for a car database that contains Nissan Patrol because most database I’ve seen miss it” this happens because most databases available online are for US market and Nissan Patrol is not sold there, my European database does contain Nissan Patrol, but won’t help him either, because Nissan sell in Middle East also Altima which do not exist in European database but exist in American database.

Other customers asked me “if my database contain certain Asian cars that are missing from most car databases” and refused to purchase my European database because they are not containing there as well. Indeed, I do not recommend customers outside Europe and America to buy from me, but I am curious… what alternatives you can buy?

I created a database in March 2018 after 3 people from Middle East requested me to extract data from Wheel-Size.com, because in Middle East there is no website showing tire information. This website cover 12 car markets, so I made it for all people needing wheels and tires size in Excel format, especially those outside Europe and America for which my original databases (European Car Models Engines Tires and Second American database) have no use.

Download free SAMPLE: Wheels and Tires Size .xlsx

Coverage: 1953-present, worldwide, in case of cars sold with different specs in various regions, the “market of sale” column shows EUDM (Europe), USDM (United States), MXDM (Mexico), LADM (Latin America), AUDM (Australia), etc. Cars sold with same specs all over the world have this column empty, so there is no way to filter out only cars sold in a particular country.

List of updates:
105 makes, 32953 model years, 430497 tire sizes – March 2018. First scraping!
107 makes, 32112 model years, 400057 tire sizes – October 2018. Source website changed codes so I had to pay my programmer again to make another scraper.
111 makes, 3265 models, ?? model years, ?? tire sizes – March 2019. After scraping makes and models, I figured out that the custom scraper to get wheels and tire details no longer works.
Number of people purchasing this Excel database was low, does not worth to pay my programmer to make a new scraper each time the source website changes code. They do change codes frequently to fight against scrapers.

At same time during March 2019, the Wheel-Size.com owner contacted me and told me to STOP selling database, instead make partnership with him, anyone who need such data can buy Wheel-Size.com API with weekly updates using below banner with “teoalida” as referral, to get 10% off.

History

Someone contacted me in 2017 to ask for an oil recommendation database, I scraped data from Pennzoil using my “universal” scraper. The customer did not replied anymore and never purchased it, and due to this reason I initially didn’t published it on website. I regret now, other people may have been interested and could do few extra sales. Pennzoil website has been redesigned meantime and the scraper was no longer working, to update it.

In March 2019 another customer needing oil database provided me 5 possible websites to scrap data from. All them are difficult to scrap, cannot do them with my universal scraper so I need to pay a programmer for a custom scraper.

By June 2019 other 5 customers contacted me interested in oil database, but we argued regarding from which is the BEST website to source data from:

Option 1: https://www.pennzoil.com/en_us/oil-selector.html#iframe=L2RvL2VuX1VTL2VxdWlwbWVudC9jYWRpbGxhY18odXMpLzIwMTkvY3RzX2x1eHVyeV8yXzB0X3Z2dF9hd2RfY3RzX0VGdDhQb2FtbA – do I need to make 1 row for Standard and 1 row for Premium, or should be separate columns? some cars have 3 or 4 oil types indicated. Give me a suggestion because my programmer need exact template how you want data to be displayed. This may be slightly easier to scrap, however personally I DON’T like this website because it have only cars sold in USA and only engine oil.

Pennzoil have also a section for oil filters: https://www.pennzoil.com/en_us/filter-selector.html but car model hierarchy is different so will require 2 different custom scrapers which will produce 2 different databases that I CANNOT combine.

Option 2: https://www.amsoil.com/lookup/auto-and-light-truck/2013/audi/a4-quattro/2-0l-4-cyl-engine-code-cpma-5-flex-turbo/us-volume/#engine1 – this one have more info than just engine oil, but the way info is displayed on website makes difficult to put each piece of information in the right column.

Option 3: https://applications.castrol.com/oilselector/en_us/c/recommendation?vehicleType=cars-and-suvs&manufacturer=bmw&model=3-series-e46-(1998-2006)&modelType=325i-(132-kw)-(2002-2005) – Castrol have cars sold in Europe and USA and also truck and motorcycles, but many cars lack oil recommendation.

Option 4: http://fuchs-eu.lubricantadvisor.com/advice.aspx?lang=eng&country=ro&type=e5167c014c627820dd5f0ce57c9a0bdb – can someone check is this is a good and reliable website to source data from? It have both cars sold in Europe and in America separated in Make list, and shows oil for more oils than just engine oil.

Option 5: https://www.bizol.com/oil-guide/##1|uk|1 this have not just cars but also trucks and motorcycles, contains cars from  US, EU and China, but is again difficult to scrap data from.

Option 6: https://www.ravenol.de/en/oil-guide.html this have not just cars but also trucks and motorcycles, agricutural and construction equipment, contains cars from  US, EU and China, but is again difficult to scrap data from.

Despite that personally I don’t like Pennzoil, 3 people choose it, so my programmer partner made a custom scraper for Pennzoil in July 2019. This is not enough to satisfy all customers because Pennzoil have only cars sold in USA, so we need to scrap one of other sites too.

Along time, few people asked me for a database of tires, I usually said “I have databases of car models with tire size indicated, not database of tire models. However, in May 2017, a customer who purchased TireSize database told me to scrap data from DiscountTire.com but this turned impossible because every time I access website via scraper it gets redirected to store-locator page. A second customer also appeared asking me for a tire models database.

We studied few other tire websites and we decided to scrap from SimpleTire.com because it have large amount if tire brands and tire models, creating this tire database with 272 brands and 50000+ models in June 2017, took some time due to complexity because initially I didn’t figured out how to scrap, the customer refused to pay for it and caused additional troubles to me, the second customer did not purchased because was too late. I publish database here so in case other people are interested too to purchase it.

First sale was done in October 2017 and I updated database to re-scrap website, but the new customer was also unhappy saying that SimpleTire website shows ONLY tires that are currently in stock, every day some tires get out of stock and others are restocked, each time I re-scrap website I get different tire models, so this tire database will NEVER reach any degree of completeness. If this is a problem, DO NOT buy this database, feel free to tell me better tire websites to scrap data from!

331 brands, 56427 models, 27 April 2018, updated again.

351 brands, 50523 tires, as 19 July 2019, after a long time with no sales, someone asked for an update.

358 brands, 51166 tires, as 7 August 2019, to add back image URL.

Another tire database

Database made by a customer from Romania and given me in exchange of a database made by me, with permission to resell on my website. Source of data is not public accessible, it require username/password and only some people can log in. It does contain also EAN code and noise level.

Chip tuning ECU remap databaseCelticTuning: free BMW sample.xls

Dyno Chiptuning: free BMW sample.xls

I created this chip tuning database privately in February 2018 when someone asked me to scrap data from celtictuning.co.uk showing engine power and torque before and after ECU remapping. In April 2018 a second person was interested in similar database, by this way I made database public on website so everyone needing it can purchase. About 10 people purchased by end of 2018.

2 customers said that CelticTuning is not accurate and suggested to scrap instead from br-performance.be and dyno-chiptuningfiles.com. And probably tomorrow a 4th customer will say that all 3 above websites are not accurate and suggest scraping from a 4th website. I do not really enjoy scraping multiple too similar websites, and waste time updating multiple databases with less than 5 sales per year. We need to decide at ONE website. What makes one better than others?

Coverage: all cars and light commercial vehicles, plus some heavy trucks sold in Europe, earliest car included is BMW 3-Series from 1991, but completion is significant after 1995. Dyno Chiptuning include also few cars that are not sold officially in Europe (GMC, Holden, Pontiac, etc).

List of updates CelticTuning:
64 makes, 901 models, 4628 engines, as February 2018.
64 makes, 904 models, 4631 engines, as April 2018.
64 makes, 940 models, 4971 engines, as 18 February 2019.

List of updates Dyno Chiptuning:
76 makes, 862 models, 1445 generations, 7514 engines, as 28 December 2018.
78 makes, 866 models, 1455 generations, 7586 engines, as 18 February 2019.
82 makes, 926 models, 1591 generations, 8189 engines, as 16 October 2019.
81 makes, 939 models, 1638 generations, 8397 engines, as 10 February 2020.

Since 18 February 2019 when I updated both, as October 2019 Dyno got 7 sales and Celtic only 2 sales, giving me impression that does not worth to update Celtic anymore.

ECU files

At the moment I created these databases I was not aware how tuning works. Several people asked me how to download the “tuning files”, I was confused what they meant since all what I am selling are Excel files with public data extracted from tuning company website (and many other websites).

This until someone informed me that anyone can tune his own car by downloading remapped files from internet and importing in their ECU. if you need this, you need to approach a tuning company, NOT me (database provider).

Later, someone else told me that can provide me few thousands ECU files in exchange of my Excel database. Can I trust this? If I get these ECU files, how do I should provide them to you and all people who want to tune themselves their own car? Been informed by other customers that thousands ECU files are available on eBay for $5. Most likely above person was trying to save $115 by buying ECU files from eBay for $5 and trying to exchange with my $120 database. Files sold on eBay are shit, they can damage your car or are not working at all. I do not have ability to read ECU files to see if they are real / usable.

History

Database created in March 2017 (137 makes, 24379 models), for a customer who needed a vehicle database of light bulb types, he told me to scrap data from philipsautolighting.com, which took about 30 hours. Later I published database on website because other people were asking me for same thing.

Updated June 2017 (140 makes, 25682 models), after noticing that Philips added 2017 models.

Another customer asked me if I can scrap from xenonhids.com theoretically I can. As September 2018 neither Philips and XenonHids added 2018 models, but found another website that did added 2018 models: xenondepot.com.

Philips finally updated their website in October 2018, adding most 2018 models and few 2019 models, but as usual, it do not contain new cars as soon they are launched, but with a delay of few months. I also do not know how often Philips website will be updated in the future.

The website was also redesigned so I could not scrap it anymore with the standard “universal” scraper. I asked a programmer partner to make a custom scraper for it. Due to same reason, scraper ran much slower than before and took 150 hours to scrap all vehicles. Brands were reorganized and number of models increased greatly to 37113, lights available (columns) also changed and now each light type can have multiple values.

Can I use database for free?

Database prices reflect my efforts researching automobile industry since 2003, compiling quality databases and keeping them up-to-date, plus offering daily customer support.

Databases are targeting commercial use, each year few hundreds companies, programmers and web developers, paying BIG $$ to ensure getting a complete vehicle database, frequently updated and with accurate technical specs, several customers offered me $1000+ to make a customized vehicle list. Hope you can do the same.

Stay away from websites offering “complete” databases for FREE download, they are most likely stolen and posted online by other people than original author, or made by careless students who needed only a bunch of data for their studies, such databases are incomplete, contain errors, are outdated, no support or updates are provided. Using databases downloaded freely may destroy your company reputation.

Samples containing 1 make with all models, or a couple of models from 2-3 makes, are available for free download on website so you can see quality of data before purchasing full database.

Prices too high! Can you offer a discount for non-commercial use?

I cannot verify if you make profit or not. You can use database for personal use, data analysis, machine learning, academic, etc, but need to purchase at same price like commercial entities. If you cannot afford my prices, we cannot make a deal. Sorry!

Full databases prices are NOT negotiable. Do not say that you are a poor student from India or Africa, you lost job, your mom died yesterday, and need full data for $10 (example of SCAM attempt mentioning death of his mother). I have a constant flow of European and American companies paying me hundreds $, I do not care about getting $10 from an Indian student (no racism intended but over 50% of Indian customers attempted to negotiate price, compared with <10% from other countries).

Discounts are ONLY if you buy partial data. I offer big databases in multiple packages, such as “new cars only” or “naming only” for people who do not need old cars and full specifications. Additionally I can offer partial databases with specific makes or car types, for example if you want to buy an used SUV and think that my database can help you making a decision, I can sell you a partial database with only SUVs produced last 5-10 years, price will be 2x my regular price per row of data.

Students who need 200 rows, 1000 rows, etc, but not full database: if the free samples with 1 make are not sufficient, I can sell you a partial database for example with 5 selected makes, 2 selected models per make, and all variants of these models, NO updates, for a discounted price. If you want for free, use sample files posted on website, DO NOT waste my time selecting models if you cannot pay even a discounted price!
