FREE version include complete list of manufacturers and list of models for 4 manufacturers, one for each continent.
PAID version have 150+ makes, 4600+ models in Worldwide version / 110+ makes with 2400+ models in Europe version.

Worldwide version

European version

Coverage: World War II – present. Few pre-war classic automobiles are included too, if they are related with post-war ones.
All major (and few minor) manufacturers of Europe, United States, Australia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, India, Brazil, Argentina.
Make, model, car classification, years produced or Model Years in case of cars sold in North America.

I guarantee that it is currently 100% COMPLETE for European and North American markets, plus for the market of the country of origin of each manufacturer. For example the Car Models List may not include any possible cars produced in Korea and sold somewhere else than EU, US, or Korea markets. This because Korea and Japan manufacturers often sell ONE car model under dozens of different names in various countries. There are over 200 countries in the world, making a global world complete database for every country is HARD JOB. But you can contribute!

Cars produced in China are not included yet (very few chinese cars are exported, Wikipedia and all the english internet offer confusing and incomplete info).

The Worldwide edition include also the sheet of Europe edition.
The Europe edition include all markets from United Kingdom to Russia and Turkey, does not focus only on Western Europe.
For North America I provide Year – Make – Model format instead of Make – Model – Start year – End year.

Source of data: mostly Wikipedia, the most comprehensive car database ever! I manually compiled the list of cars into an Excel database, creating an original product “Made by Teoalida” with no equivalent on internet! Excel allow for easy reading, sort, filter, as well as conversion to CSV and SQL database to be used in web building.

The list include model generations (example: VW Golf IV), platforms (example: BMW E46), chassis code (example: Mercedes W124), with exact years of production for each of them. If you want just model names, without separate row for each Golf I to Golf VII, you should use Car Nameplates List instead.

Commercial vehicles under 3.5t are included too. No concept cars or prototypes, only vehicles sold in world markets.

The list does also include a short description (company history) for some brands, as suggested by a customer in 2013, however the next customers did not liked the idea so I did not added description for remaining brands. Should I continue writing descriptions?

There is also a column for number of units produced, but I was able to find this info for only 8% of total models, mostly exotic cars, so if you are looking for a production figures for all cars, this Car Models List will NOT help you.

History

Original Car Models List was compiled in Word, it was not market specific, but instead showing the domestic market of every manufacturer (except Japan), for European manufacturers it showed models sold in Europe, for American manufacturers it showed models sold in America (years column displayed Model Years instead of production years), for Asian manufacturers it showed models sold in Europe plus few local models.

Since December 2012 offer the list of car models also in Excel format (4 columns) after I met a web developer looking for a Make / Model database in Excel format for quick import in MySQL database.

During 2013 I expanded the car make and model list to 8 columns, added “Sold in EU / US” and put Model Years for North American market on separate column from Production years, and made it complete also for American market, by adding Japanese and Korean models produced exclusively for America.

Due of the inevitable inaccuracy that you should expect in any WORLDWIDE global database, caused primarily by cars sold under multiple names in different markets or same name used in different markets for multiple unrelated cars, since May 2013 I provide also an accurate Europe-only version in same format, every few months, extracted from Worldwide database which I update constantly (every month).

In 2016 I finalized Japanese Domestic Market at the level of completion of Wikipedia. However we cannot know how complete is Wikipedia.

Big dilemmas! You can decide how I will improve the list of car models in the future

– Should put the model name and platform code / generation number on separate columns? DONE!
– Should make separate EU and US files (delete all models that are not imported in each market)? DONE for Europe!
– Should include Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, etc, divisions of European manufacturers? They produce mostly SAME models but in DIFFERENT production years, currently European-designed models produced also in Latin America are not added (due of risk of being considered duplicate entries), but models designed and produced ONLY in Latin America were added in June 2013 edition.
– Models such as Ford Focus and Focus C-MAX should be included together, as they share same platform, or separately, in Compact cars and Compact MPV classes?
– What is best thing to do when a vehicle is sold with multiple names in different countries? Currently the Excel table contains names used in European, American markets plus the country of origin (European name is shown the first). Example: Kia Magentis (Europe) = Kia Opirus (America) = Kia K5 (Korea), possible additional names from the rest of world are not included. This is getting a SERIOUS ISSUE since I am expanding the Car Models List beyond European and American markets. Would be good idea an additional column “Alternate names” while the main column to display ONLY the name from the country of origin?

One customer complained that is incomplete in the sense that I displayed Renault Clio III as 2005-2012, he claimed that was original model 2005-2008 and facelifted model 2008-2012. Car Models List excel database include only all-new models, NOT mid-life facelifts because of impossibility to identify all minor modifications of a car model. Facelifts which involved changes in body design are included in Car Body Database.

The motorcycle database is the ONLY product on this website that is not “100% made by Teoalida”. It resulted from a “work exchange” with a customer who needed both cars and bikes and we agreed to give him a discount for my manually-made biggest car database and he made a script to copy data automatically from www.bikez.com and put in a CSV file with permission to sell it on my website.

Bikez.com is a fan-made website, there are many data fields, but actual data is available for just a small amount of bike models. Due to this reason, I am selling bikes database at lower price than car databases.

Fan-made website means less restrictive in terms of copyright. You are free to use this data on your own website. Already seen a website (motociclisti.ro) using same data from bikez.com, everything translated into Romanian.

Bikez.com website originally covered 1970-present, but during summer 2016 it was expanded to 1930-present and during autumn was further expanded to 1984-present.

My experience is limited to cars so I cannot tell how complete is for bikes sold in any specific country in the world, but with 30000+ bike models I assume that is most comprehensive website with bikes produced worldwide, even if in the early years there are much lower number of bikes per year, compared with 2000s and 2010s..

Motorcycle database was created and launched for sale in May 2016, with 43 fields (columns) found on common bike models. After first release, I started browsing other bikes and found additional data fields which I included in the August 2016 update, having 62 columns, after this I re-started looking at bike models with most fields filled up and found that they have even more fields not yet included, so I released final version in September 2016 with 71 columns. For example, August 2016 release include 0-100 kmph available for 1% of bikes, and after this I found that other bikes contain also 1/4 mile and 60-140 kmph in highest gear. There is possible that Bikez.com to have even more data fields but they are available for so small amount of bikes that does not add any value to my database.

Year Make Model Specifications car database for American market

The trims database does have same number of rows but just first 5 columns, making duplicate rows for each trim due to differences such as FWD / 4WD, manual / automatic, different engine, different features, etc. A proper car trim database, filtered from trim duplicates, require additional dozens of hours of work too much considering how many sales it can get. Should do this job?

The dimensions database: there are some vehicles offered with multiple dimensions for same body style, example: Lexus LS short and long wheelbase, Ford F-150 short and long truck bed, etc. They have duplicate Year, Make, Model, Body which can pose a potential problem for integrating database in a website. Including trims would be NOT the right solution because would increase number of rows significantly for no reason and Ford F-150 have same trim in multiple bed lengths. Can someone suggest the best solution for these vehicles?

American car database coverage

Complete for all cars, trucks, SUVs and minivans sold in United States from Model Year 1990 to present. Exotic makes (Ferrari, Lotus, Maserati, etc) which are MY 2001 onward. Vehicles sold in Canada but not in United States are NOT included as they are included in Year-Make-Model which is based on Wikipedia. Certain technical data (valves, cam type) is available for MY 2001 onward. This is due to the website I based my database on.

Apparently they changed source of data for MY 2001 as some cars like Mercedes C43 AMG were listed as separate model for MY 2000 and as trim under C-Class for MY 2001, had to correct these model naming issues manually. The specs are consistent before and after MY 2001 change.

Are you interested in cars older than 1990? I am interested too, for my personal research and for selling such database! Show me a website having older vehicles displaying at least car engine size, power and dimensions, and I will see if I can copy data from it!

Data fields included

There are 78 columns in this vehicle database, but unlike my well-known car databases for Europe with 99% completion ratio for most columns, this American car database have many columns with data available for just 50-90% of vehicles, due to the incompleteness of the website I used to source data from. Beside 5 columns of model naming, there are 16 columns with 98-99%+ completion ratio. Hope this is enough for most applications. Feel free to delete the columns with incomplete data.

Naming: ID, Make, Model, Year, Trim, Description, Car class 100%.

Accuracy notes

This vehicle database is NOT a “scrap and sell data as it is”. I spent extra time and used my high automotive experience to correct errors and improve model hierarchy when compared with original source website. Probably this will also help you having an unique automobile database that do not exist on any website, and avoid copyright issues.

Example of corrections:
– Mercedes W202 C36 and C43 AMG were listed as separate model beside C-Class while W203 C32 AMG were listed as a trim under C-Class. To make things clearer I decided to list all AMG cars as trims, same for BMW M and Audi S models.
– Porsche Cayman was launched with S trim only so for MY 2006 was listed under model name “Cayman S” while for next years model name is “Cayman” with trims “Base” and “S”. I corrected and put MY 2006 “S” as trim.
– Subaru Impreza WRX was is listed as trim under Impreza for MY 2002-2012, as separate model “Impreza WRX” for MY 2013-2014 and as separate model “WRX” for MY 2015-2016. I modified and listed all WRX as trim under Impreza model.

India car database

Description

In August 2015 I learned to scrap data from websites, the India car database was my first scraping project, as opposite of the manually-written European car databases that I am making since 2003. Lots of people were asking me if I have an indian car database, that times nobody was selling.

Source of data: Carwale.com, which removed discontinued models in March 2017, so my database contains valuable data that you cannot get yourself from Carwale anymore. Unfortunately India do not have a quality car website that display years produced for every car version (as I personally wanted). Database contains production years indicated only for discontinued models and only if there are multiple generations of same model. Not good in my opinion but there was no other alternative. HAD TO DO IT in this way. If you know other better source of data please tell me.

Personally I viewed web scraping as copyright issue and cheating way to make databases, but most people are not against web scraping. Personally I am interested only in CARS, but people asked me if I can scrap data for BIKES, TRUCKS, BUSES, car dealers and other stuff. And I did! For additional data scraping please ask!

India database coverage

Mid-1990s to present, meaning that the database is complete for all cars ever imported in India.
Do note India car market boomed only in late 1990s and especially during 2000s. In early 1990s the ONLY cars available were Maruti (dominant passenger cars), Mahindra and Tata (off-road and commercial vehicles), Hindustan and Premier (outdated passenger cars).
Daewoo was the FIRST foreign car manufacturer to enter in Indian market (1994), followed by Ford and Opel (1996), Fiat (1997), Honda and Hyundai (1998).

List of makes included

Ashok Leyland, Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, BMW, Bugatti, Caterham, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Datsun, Daewoo, DC, Eicher Polaris, Ferrari, Fiat, Force Motors, Ford, Honda, Hindustan Motors, Hyundai, ICML, Isuzu, Jaguar, Jeep, Lamborghini, Land Rover, Lexus, Mahindra, Mahindra Renault, Maini, Maruti Suzuki, Maserati, Maybach, Mercedes-Benz, Mini, Mitsubishi, Opel, Nissan, Porsche, Premier, Renault, Rolls-Royce, San, Skoda, Ssangyong, Tata, Toyota, Volkswagen, Volvo, Willys.

Bonus: Car class, Body style 100.00% (added manually from my personal experience, NOT scraped from website).

Percentages as 1 January 2017 (3680 cars).

How was made & quality notes

While the European car database is made via manual data entry (thus adding new data constantly), and American car database is a mix between manual work and automatic web scraping, the Indian car database is just a web scraping job.

Good news: easy to update. Bad news: I sell “as it is” without corrections or filling missing data. A customer asked me if I can add body type column (hatchback, sedan, convertible, etc). I can add for a fee, but at each update any additional data will be lost, so I would need to charge the adding fee again = not cost-effective.

Typical programmers charge $300-500 to build a web scraper (example), plus $50-100 for each update. You can buy ready data from me for $30-120 with free monthly updates for one year.

is OK to scrap data from websites using automatic software, instead of compiling data manually in Excel?

YES, scraping is legal and a nice way to get the data faster, I am willing to pay you for a database that is scraped from somewhere and not your original work
NO, scraping is illegal, means stealing data from a website that invested a huge effort in making their database, scraping produce a database too similar with the source website, causing copyright trouble for people who buy the database and use in their own websites. You NEED to compile data manually and make original content, different than the source.
I don’t care how the data was obtained, scraped automatically or compiled manually, as long the data is accurate and error free, and you check it manually and correct errors if necessary

Future updates will be only for new cars… sorry for this

Indian car database launched for sale in August 2015, and after doing ~8 sales and 3 updates, I decided in May 2016 to offer monthly updates on 1st day of month. Each update takes 8 fours of data scraping + 2 hours post-scraping manual work. I scrap every make to get models, every model URL to get versions, every version URL to get specifications, remove all data from previous update and put new data. See list of updates.

In February 2017 Carwale decided to hide discontinued models from website. I kept updating database by scraping for new versions URL, add them into database, compare the unique ID, delete duplicates, then scrap all versions URL to get specifications including current price and last recorded price that indicate whenever a car is in production or discontinued.

In November 2017 Carwale removed unique ID from each URL, causing all URLs to be changed and redirected, in 10 cases the old version URLs redirect to 404 Not Found, in 197 cases the old version URLs is redirecting to a different car that it should (multiple old URLs redirect to same new URL), making me impossible to re-scrap old cars for updates without risking loss of model versions. I will continue to update database monthly by adding new cars, but without updates for old cars, database quality will go down over time, when a model is discontinued and replaced with a new model with same name, discontinued model name will not be updated with production years to differentiate from current production model, specifications including prices will also not be updated for old cars, etc.

India bikes database

One of the first people who bought the Indian car database in August 2015 wanted a 2-wheeler database too. Initially I said NO because I was personally interested only in cars, but once I mastered my data scraping skills, I decided to offer web scraping services for individual customers. In January 2016 another customer wanted to scrap bike specs from Bikewale.com, this was the moment I created bike database . I update every few months when I got new sales.

Initially in 2016 Bikewale was showing only current production models, the discontinued models being added near end-2016 but I was not aware of until October 2017. I updated database raising number of models from ~250 to over 600. Note: if a bike have multiple versions, database contains specs of base version, because the versions do not have a distinct URL, proper scraping is impossible.

Trucks and buses

I made them in September 2016 for a customer who never paid for the job he requested me to do. First person to purchase them came in January 2018 so I updated them for first time, future updates will be done at request.

As August 2018 I noticed that CarDekho made each version URL to redirect to main model URL, effectively making me impossible to scrap specifications of other versions than base version. Probably I will never update them again. Only 3 people purchased them so does not worth my effort to keep maintaining.

CarWale On-Road Prices.csv – A very difficult job which involved about 20 hours of coding in Visual Basic to make an application sending javascript requests to CarWale website to get price of each car in each city, application works at a rate of 2 requests per second, so 3100 cars × 510 cities = 1632000 seconds = 226 hours needed to get all on-road prices, RTO tax and insurance. The empty cells is because certain cars are available only in selected cities (Aston Martin only in Mumbai, Maruti is available in 500+ cities).

Due to time required to scrap all cities, I done future updates MONTHLY for a shortened list of 47 cities that takes about 22 hours and asked customer to pay for each update.

Goods and Services Tax was implemented on 1 July 2017 and harmonized car prices across India, the customer told me that updates are no longer required.

Used cars – Scraping used cars websites is a big stupidity in my opinion, since they are never complete, cars are removed from site once their owners found a buyer, you are not getting any usable data, but someone told me specifically to scrap an indian used cars website. CarDekho was the easiest to scrap, and have 45000+ cars.

WARNING for people asking about car owners

A number of people have trouble understanding what I am selling or don’t bother to check samples of what I am selling (database of car MODELS), they ask me straight to sell them a database of car OWNERS with registration number, name, address, profession, phone, email, insurance expiry date, etc. Strangely I do not get such questions from Europe and America, but ONLY from India.

I DO NOT have registration / owners data, and the companies who does have (car dealerships and insurance companies) must follow personal data protection laws and DO NOT share data of their customers to third-parties.

If you do a google search “car owners database” you see at least 10 sites selling personal data illegally, all them from India, the only country in the world where people have no respect for personal data and email/SMS spamming is like a national sport. But I am skeptical about how real is this data, how it was obtained and how updated it is, considering that vehicle registration authority do not keep records of emails and phone numbers, but only of residence address. Furthermore, most drivers do not even use email!

The only way to get car registration data legally and up-to-date is to apply in vahan.nic.in “The Ministry has decided to offer the services to different stake holders like Banks, Insurance Companies etc on payment basis.” If you do apply, please inform me what are their prices.

Car Nameplates ListDownload SAMPLE: Car Nameplates List.xls.

Buy complete database + FREE updates for 1 year:

While Car Models List have separate row for each model generation (example Golf 1 to Golf 7) with production years indicated for each, and single row if a car is sold in multiple countries under different names, the Car Nameplates List have a single row for each nameplate regardless of how many models wore it, sometimes define totally different models (example: Ford Fusion is a mid-size sedan in North America and also a mini MPV in Europe), and separate row for each alternative name sold in various countries. Separate row is also for sister cars such as Fiat Bravo / Brava, VW Golf / Jetta.

Car Nameplates List is sold in 3 versions:

  • XLS original order from Car Models List (from mini cars to luxury cars, followed by sports cars, MPVs and ending with SUVs), used by me to add missing models.
  • XLS alphabetic order (you could sort yourself too).
  • CSV alphabetic with 2 files, one with one row per Make + Make ID, one with one row per model with Make ID, Make, Model, etc.

History

The idea of Car Nameplates List popped in March 2013, when a customer showed me an used cars classifieds website having a drop-down list of models. At that moment I was NOT aware that my Excel database can be used for this kind of web building. Funny: that drop-down list had many errors and duplicate models such Mercedes SLS, SLS-Class, SLS AMG, 3 rows for what is actually a single model. I offered him to create myself a Car Nameplates List without such stupidities, but he refused and purchased Car Models List instead.

I still made a SAMPLE of Car Nameplates List with 2 makes and put it in possible future projects waiting for a customer interested, saying that I can build full list in 3 days for 20 euro. For 2 years NOBODY showed any interest, while Car Models List continued to get sales.

In 2015 I posted Car Nameplates List in the product grid of main page. First customer interested came in November 2015 but did not left any email address where I could announce him that project is complete. A second customer came in January 2016. By this way I decided to start the project, I spend 5 days recompiling Car Models List into Car Nameplates List. I published for sale in February 2016, 2900 nameplates, 524 KB file.

One customer suggested adding a numerical ID for each make, and make a second table with Make and Make ID, and sell both as SQL files for making drop-down boxes on his website. DONE!

The plan was to start regular updates once it gets 10 sales, but by end-2016 only 5 people purchased Car Nameplates List, while Car Models List got about 40 sales. 4 people purchased in 2017. The project looked like a failure. Sales increased to 11 in 2018 so I decided to revive the project, but did not knew how long would have taken and priority was to update the more expensive databases with higher sale volume.

I done the first update in January 2019, took me 10 hours, side-by-side on screen with Car Models List, adding 430 nameplates, making a total of 3330 nameplates from 183 makes, 725 KB. Added what was launched last 3 years but also lots of nameplates from outside Europe and North America that were added in Car Models List during last 3 years of worldwide expansion.

Another update in May 2019, 3658 nameplates from 229 makes, 801 KB. I added over 40 minor manufacturers in Car Models List and Car Nameplates List.

Because in the recent updates I added too many minor brands / exotic cars that are seen more at museums and collectors than driving on roads, at May 2019 update I also added a column that allow you to delete easily the exotic brands, if you want to have a database with only cars commonly seen on roads.

Example of cars included and marked as minor brands: Cizeta-Moroder (1990s supercar with only 20 units produced), Messerschmitt (cheap 1950s bubble car, 15,000 units produced but most of them been scraped and are not driving anymore), Peel (1960s, 2 models, less than 100 units produced, but famous for Peel P50 which is listed in Guinness book of records as world’s smallest car).

Update December 2019, 3681 nameplates from 229 makes, 848 KB.

History

I created this database in 2016 to serve the numerous visitors from United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia that were coming on my website looking for a car database for their region.

Source of data: www.DriveArabia.com, I paid my programmer partner to make a standalone scraping application (exe file), the website was easy-to-scrap, having all cars accessible via links, but is weak in terms of amount of data. I told him to include 16 columns of technical specs. Scraping takes about 1h 30min.

Furthermore in late 2016 same programmer made an universal scraping application that can be used on many websites, but it was not producing data in the right format so I did not used it for this particular database.

In summer 2017 DriveArabia had a major redesign, making standalone scraping application useless. I used the universal scraper instead, configuring it to include all data from website, not just technical specs but also model overview, reviews, reliability, and image URL. Scraping also takes 1h 30min, but do not produce data in the right format, so now after each scraping need to manually manipulate data which takes few hours. In 2018 my programmer improved universal scraper so the manual work is no longer required, data comes in the right format from scraper, allowing me to update database as often customers wants.

DriveArabia do not have individual pages for each engine, but just for model. Model pages are identical for all years you select, all engines offered during whole model production period (not just the year you selected) are displayed in table format. Some models display 0-100 kph and top speed as ranges, this because the model have multiple body styles with different specifications, and the website do not show body styles separate.

At 2017 redesign DriveArabia (sadly) removed the field displaying all years a model was produced without changes, a must-have feature to distinguish where a generation ends and next one starts.

If you know other websites that I can scrap data from, with more detailed car specs, tell me!

There are NO TRIMS in this database (no BMW 320i sedan, 330d touring, etc, just model names BMW 3-Series).
If you want body styles, trims and more details, see instead Year-Make-Model-Trim-Specs but it does not go beyond 1990.

Database coverage

Complete for World War II – present. New and used cars, light trucks, SUVs and vans, basically all vehicles that can be driven with car standard driving license, sold in North America. I added notes regarding cars specific to Canada and not sold in United States, but I do not know which cars sold in United States were sold or not in Canada.

Database also include 234 vintage cars MY 1917-1942, if there is a name connection with post-war models, example Chrysler Imperial (since 1926) and Chevrolet Suburban (since 1933), but it is not and will never be complete for pre-war period.

Last release: May 2019. including 317 “2020 models”, see Changelog & version history.

Source of data

Mainly Wikipedia, which is pretty accurate for cars produced in USA and for cars imported from Japan, but not for cars imported from Europe, so to get higher accuracy I also verified with the highly-reliable Edmunds (unfortunately 1990-present only), eBay Motors (unreliable, may model years that actually do not exist), Nada Guides (some missing models and messed up names, for example missing Suzuki after 1997 and incompleteness of Porsche 1998-2010, but best source of data for 1940-1990), and CarListDB.com (one of my competitors in data providing that was closed in 2015).

There is some confusion at cars imported before 1990 regarding the model years each model was available for sale, in case of contradictory info I added notes in Excel table “possible non-existent model year, existent on CarListDB, non-existent on NadaGuides” so you have guarantee that you get a car and truck database with NO missing models.

Updating procedure

I do one main yearly update: in May 2019 I added in advance all “2020 Models” that may be launched during 2019, by duplicating “2019 models” unless there was an announcement on Wikipedia that 2019 is the last year for that model (I manually checked each car model on Wikipedia). I may have added in database models that may never launch. I do additional minor updates and corrections at random times of year.

This procedure save my time from checking each manufacturer website every month, save your hassle of requesting updates every month, and guarantee NO missing cars!

Description

I created this UK car database in January 2019 after multiple people requested me to do this job. For long time I avoided spending additional effort to make an UK car database because I already had the Car Models & Engines Database for whole Europe that has been purchased by many people in UK without problems, and the more detailed German Car Database was not selling well.

But… a small number of people wanted a more detailed database than European one (which have 1 row per body / engine / drivetrain combination, ignoring trims / equipment versions). Some did purchased German one but the ones from UK wanted an UK-specific one. The UK website turned much easier to scrap than originally expected, easier than other German and American websites I have scraped data from. I feel sorry for not creating this UK car database earlier!

List of updates:

2389 models, 80406 versions – 20 January 2019, initial scrap, beta version. 45 columns.
2389 models, 80485 versions – 3 February 2019, re-scraped to fix the incorrect car prices in initial scrap.
2383 models, 81501 versions – 28 March 2019.
2418 models, 81873 versions – 7 May 2019, removed unit of measurement after values, made multiple tables and VLOOKUP formulas in order to add model production years (different than version production years) and image URL from small database into big database, also status (production / discontinued) for purpose of selling a “new cars only” package with discount. 52 columns.
101 makes, 2439 models, 83314 versions – 5 September 2019.
101 makes, 2439 models, 83430 versions – 16 September 2019.
101 makes, 2467 models, 84532 versions – 7 December 2019.
102 makes, 2481 models, 84966 versions – 14 February 2020.

Description

A lot of people asked me for a JDM car database, but I was facing trouble because most websites from Japan are in Japanese language while they needed English specifications. In March 2019 a customer told me about one Japanese website in English and after this I found 3 more similar websites, I choose the best one, coded a scraper and published database for sale in April 2019.

This database include ONLY car models sold in Japanese domestic market (including foreign models sold here) and target people from Japan as well as people from LHD countries in Asia and Africa who import used cars from Japan.

This database does NOT include car models made in Japan exclusively for export, for example Acura and Infiniti (Japanese brands aimed primarily for US market but sold also in Europe and Middle East), or example of Toyota models sold in US market but NOT sold in Japan: 4Runner, C-HR, Cressida, ECHO, Highlander, Matrix, Paseo, Previa, Sequoia, Sienna, T100, Tacoma, Tundra, Venza, Yaris. For these car models you can buy one my American databases.

Each update involve re-scraping all cars and takes about 22 hours.

Wheels and Tires Size

I created a database in March 2018 after 3 people from Middle East requested me to extract data from Wheel-Size.com, because in Middle East there is no website showing tire information. This website cover 12 car markets, so I made it for all people needing wheels and tires size in Excel format, especially those outside Europe and America for which my original databases (European Car Models Engines Tires and Second American database) have no use.

Download free SAMPLE: Wheels and Tires Size .xlsx

Coverage: 1953-present, worldwide, in case of cars sold with different specs in various regions, the “market of sale” column shows EUDM (Europe), USDM (United States), MXDM (Mexico), LADM (Latin America), AUDM (Australia), etc. Cars sold with same specs all over the world have this column empty, so there is no way to filter out only cars sold in a particular country.

List of updates:
105 makes, 32953 model years, 430497 tire sizes – March 2018. First scraping!
107 makes, 32112 model years, 400057 tire sizes – October 2018. Source website changed codes so I had to pay my programmer again to make another scraper.
111 makes, 3265 models, ?? model years, ?? tire sizes – March 2019. After scraping makes and models, I figured out that the custom scraper to get wheels and tire details no longer works.
Number of people purchasing this Excel database was low, does not worth to pay my programmer to make a new scraper each time the source website changes code. They do change codes frequently to fight against scrapers.

At same time during March 2019, the Wheel-Size.com owner contacted me and told me to STOP selling database, instead make partnership with him, anyone who need such data can buy Wheel-Size.com API with weekly updates using below banner with “teoalida” as referral, to get 10% off.

Chip tuning ECU remap databaseCelticTuning: free BMW sample.xls

Dyno Chiptuning: free BMW sample.xls

I created this chip tuning database privately in February 2018 when someone asked me to scrap data from celtictuning.co.uk showing engine power and torque before and after ECU remapping. In April 2018 a second person was interested in similar database, by this way I made database public on website so everyone needing it can purchase. About 10 people purchased by end of 2018.

2 customers said that CelticTuning is not accurate and suggested to scrap instead from br-performance.be and dyno-chiptuningfiles.com. And probably tomorrow a 4th customer will say that all 3 above websites are not accurate and suggest scraping from a 4th website. I do not really enjoy scraping multiple too similar websites, and waste time updating multiple databases with less than 5 sales per year. We need to decide at ONE website. What makes one better than others?

Coverage: all cars and light commercial vehicles, plus some heavy trucks sold in Europe, earliest car included is BMW 3-Series from 1991, but completion is significant after 1995. Dyno Chiptuning include also few cars that are not sold officially in Europe (GMC, Holden, Pontiac, etc).

List of updates CelticTuning:
64 makes, 901 models, 4628 engines, as February 2018.
64 makes, 904 models, 4631 engines, as April 2018.
64 makes, 940 models, 4971 engines, as 18 February 2019.

List of updates Dyno Chiptuning:
76 makes, 862 models, 1445 generations, 7514 engines, as 28 December 2018.
78 makes, 866 models, 1455 generations, 7586 engines, as 18 February 2019.
82 makes, 926 models, 1591 generations, 8189 engines, as 16 October 2019.
81 makes, 939 models, 1638 generations, 8397 engines, as 10 February 2020.

Since 18 February 2019 when I updated both, as October 2019 Dyno got 7 sales and Celtic only 2 sales, giving me impression that does not worth to update Celtic anymore.

Data fields included and their completion percentage

General: URL 100%, Name 96.36%, Make 100%, Model 100%, Generation 100%, Engine 100%.

Engine specifications: BHP standard 96.36%, BHP tuned 96.36%, BHP difference 96.36%, TORQUE standard 96.36%, TORQUE tuned 96.36%, TORQUE difference 96.36%.

Tuning details: Type of fuel 93.38%, Method 96.36%, Tuningtype 96.36%, Cylinder content 89.87%, Engine ECU 76.37%, Compression ratio 86.07%, Bore X stroke 87.02%, Engine number 82.23%, Read methods 74.17%, Additional options 92.14%.

ECU files

At the moment I created these databases I was not aware how tuning works. Several people asked me how to download the “tuning files”, I was confused what they meant since all what I am selling are Excel files with public data extracted from tuning company website (and many other websites).

This until someone informed me that anyone can tune his own car by downloading remapped files from internet and importing in their ECU. if you need this, you need to approach a tuning company, NOT me (database provider).

Later, someone else told me that can provide me few thousands ECU files in exchange of my Excel database. Can I trust this? If I get these ECU files, how do I should provide them to you and all people who want to tune themselves their own car? Been informed by other customers that thousands ECU files are available on eBay for $5. Most likely above person was trying to save $115 by buying ECU files from eBay for $5 and trying to exchange with my $120 database. Files sold on eBay are shit, they can damage your car or are not working at all. I do not have ability to read ECU files to see if they are real / usable.

Database prices reflect my efforts researching automobile industry since 2003, compiling quality databases and keeping them up-to-date, plus offering daily customer support.

Databases are targeting commercial use, each year few hundreds companies, programmers and web developers, paying BIG $$ to ensure getting a complete vehicle database, frequently updated and with accurate technical specs, several customers offered me $1000+ to make a customized vehicle list. Hope you can do the same.

Stay away from websites offering “complete” databases for FREE download, they are most likely stolen and posted online by other people than original author, or made by careless students who needed only a bunch of data for their studies, such databases are incomplete, contain errors, are outdated, no support or updates are provided. Using databases downloaded freely may destroy your company reputation.

Samples containing 1 make with all models, or a couple of models from 2-3 makes, are available for free download on website so you can see quality of data before purchasing full database.

Prices too high! Can you offer a discount for non-commercial use?

I cannot verify if you make profit or not. You can use database for personal use, data analysis, machine learning, academic, etc, but need to purchase at same price like commercial entities. If you cannot afford my prices, we cannot make a deal. Sorry!

Full databases prices are NOT negotiable. Do not say that you are a poor student from India or Africa, you lost job, your mom died yesterday, and need full data for $10 (example of SCAM attempt mentioning death of his mother). I have a constant flow of European and American companies paying me hundreds $, I do not care about getting $10 from an Indian student (no racism intended but over 50% of Indian customers attempted to negotiate price, compared with <10% from other countries).

Discounts are ONLY if you buy partial data. I offer big databases in multiple packages, such as “new cars only” or “naming only” for people who do not need old cars and full specifications. Additionally I can offer partial databases with specific makes or car types, for example if you want to buy an used SUV and think that my database can help you making a decision, I can sell you a partial database with only SUVs produced last 5-10 years, price will be 2x my regular price per row of data.

Students who need 200 rows, 1000 rows, etc, but not full database: if the free samples with 1 make are not sufficient, I can sell you a partial database for example with 5 selected makes, 2 selected models per make, and all variants of these models, NO updates, for a discounted price. If you want for free, use sample files posted on website, DO NOT waste my time selecting models if you cannot pay even a discounted price!

Note for cheap freelance web developers

Some people from western world choose to hire Indian webdesigners on Freelancer and Upwork because they are cheaper, these freelancers quote less than $500 for website creation without taking in consideration the price of database (some databases made by me cost over $500 in their highest package), then come at me trying to negotiate price, happened few times that actual customer to contact me at same time as well and apologize for webdesigner rude attitude.

If you are in such situation, I suggest to talk with customer and tell him to buy database on his behalf, separately from price of web development service, most customers understand this and you not having to spend part of $ on database will leave more $ in your pocket too.

Some webdesigners informed me that bought from carmakemodeldatabase.com which was not been updated since 2013, or carqueryapi.com selling apparently a worldwide database that is not complete for any given market (after 2014 it contains only cars sold in US, some cars sold in US are also missing), this because their website is simpler and nicer and their database is cheaper… then came to buy also from me to have a complete and up-to-date database even if is more expensive.

Buy complete database:

Along time, few people asked me for a database of tires, I usually said “I have databases of car models with tire size indicated, not database of tire models. However, in May 2017, a customer who purchased TireSize database told me to scrap data from DiscountTire.com but this turned impossible because every time I access website via scraper it gets redirected to store-locator page. A second customer also appeared asking me for a tire models database.

We studied few other tire websites and we decided to scrap from SimpleTire.com because it have large amount if tire brands and tire models, creating this tire database with 272 brands and 50000+ models in June 2017, took some time due to complexity because initially I didn’t figured out how to scrap, the customer refused to pay for it and caused additional troubles to me, the second customer did not purchased because was too late. I publish database here so in case other people are interested too to purchase it.

First sale was done in October 2017 and I updated database to re-scrap website, but the new customer was also unhappy saying that SimpleTire website shows ONLY tires that are currently in stock, every day some tires get out of stock and others are restocked, each time I re-scrap website I get different tire models, so this tire database will NEVER reach any degree of completeness. If this is a problem, DO NOT buy this database, feel free to tell me better tire websites to scrap data from!

331 brands, 56427 models, 27 April 2018, updated again.

351 brands, 50523 tires, as 19 July 2019, after a long time with no sales, someone asked for an update.

358 brands, 51166 tires, as 7 August 2019, to add back image URL.

It does contain also EAN code and noise level.

About me & history of Car Database

$

Teoalida’s Car Database was born from a major hobby for automobiles and pleasure for working in Excel and data analysis. It is one of MANY hobbies started during childhood and one of the FEW hobbies turning into business during adulthood.

This is mostly 1-man business. I (Teoalida) do data entry, web scraping, database updates, design my website, and also customer support via chat every day. I employ other people just for coding certain scrapers too complex for me.

After years of dedication I became the biggest data provider in automobile industry, given by numerous car databases offered for various regions of world, complete, accurate and frequently updated, plus other databases about geography, real estate and electronic products.

I am born in a family of engineers (read more on About me), I use AutoCAD since 1998 and in 2008 I started designing buildings, many people encouraged me to pursue a career in architecture, but this turned to be a bad experience due to difficulties in convincing people to pay my services, many idiots who want house plans for free, and in the rare cases when I was paid, it was one-time payment per project. I had little contact with people in IT and nobody ever told me that these databases can be a gold mine.

The hobby for cars started in 1999, since 2003 I use Excel to create an all-cars database, independently from the internet world (I connected to internet in 2005), manually entering data from the very reliable AutoKatalog car magazines from Germany (as seen in above video), making an original compilation that you cannot find anywhere else online (except on websites that purchased from me).

In 2011 I published my works for first time intending to share with other car hobbyists, but had the surprise to be visited by programmers, web designers and mobile app developers, working for various companies (car insurance, car parts shops, car shipping services, etc), realizing that I can make a business from this!

Due to poor website design and offering too much for free, plus data structure optimized for on-screen reading rather than for programming, I did not made any sale until May 2012. I had to do many changes to make it appealing for this unexpected audience, both in data structure and in website presentation, including moving in November 2012 to WordPress to have an eCommerce plugin where people can make payments and receive databases automatically, this helped me to have in each each month of 2013 more sales than whole 2012 year. I started updating databases regularly.

Most of these programmers have little experience in cars, some making mistakes such as buying wrong database, buying an American car database when they do business in Europe, or buying from other data providers just because their database is cheaper or have more rows, ending with bad quality databases with many missing models or incorrect data.

A new era started in 2015: web scraping. Previously I avoided to copy data from other websites, thinking that it means cheating, copyright issue, illegal way to collect data and creating non-original content, but most people have no issue with this, they do not care about buying someone’s original compilation and ask me specifically to create scripts that extract data from various websites and sell them CSV. Now I want to apologize to all owners of websites I scraped data from, but if I was rejecting these customers motivating that scraping is illegal, customers would go to other data mining companies or freelancers and obtained same data anyway.

In 2015 I sold approximately 100 databases, enough to quit my job of AutoCAD and architectural design, and dedicate my life to data providing industry.

Over time I realized that web scraping is not as dangerous as I though, since 2015 to 2018 I created additional 50+ databases, raising my income 5 times, including the best-selling car databases for America, India, Middle East, Australia, motorcycles database, real estate databases, mobile phones, etc. During 2018 over 500 people have paid me for databases.

Having high experience in automobile industry and few other fields, I carefully choose what websites to scrap data from, to maximize accuracy and data completion rather than largest number of car model variations as other people may do.

All databases made by me wear a signature: the very colorful Excel spreadsheets with borders in correct place (since 2013 I realized that majority of customers import data into MySQL instead of visualization in Excel, so the visual enhancements are useless), but they prove how much CARE I spend developing databases.

Just look at there metrics comparing with other car database providers

Teoalida car database vs other data providers

Full story

The love for cars began in 1999, while walking to school I started counting car makes and number of cars for each foreign make. My list contained about 50, I omitted all american car makes as well as sport car manufacturers like Ferrari or Aston Martin since these were never seen on Romanian roads.

I was curious how many car makes and models exists, so I started collecting information. I had lack of sources of information, in first years my parents rarely bought me car magazines, also the car magazines show new launched models, rather than a worldwide list of cars models including historical models, like an encyclopedia. A friend gave me Auto Catalog 1997 (a car magazine released once per year, showing about 120 makes and technical data for about 2000 worldwide model versions).

I also have an obsession for making tables and statistics about everything. Since I had a computer, knowledge of Microsoft World and Excel, car magazines, and free time, I began writing my own automobile encyclopedia, to organize my knowledge about cars and fulfill my hobby of data analysis.

I started by writing in Notepad the list of car models (one TXT for each brand) sorted by manufacturer and car classes, with years of production (no technical data), to sort out the cars and understand which is the successor of which model. Later the TXT were combined in a single file Car Models List.DOC, additionally I made Car Models Timeline.XLS. Also I wrote a Car Body List for selected brands, because some successive models have different production years for each body style.

Early automobile encyclopedia made in Word

My dad taught me to use Microsoft Word and even set me rules how to write a nice book: body text with 12pt font, titles with 16-20pt font, centered, bold, underlined, etc. Writing about cars was my idea (I was writing also a geography encyclopedia, as well many other stuff).

My dad told me to finish my works and print them because “what is not finished have ZERO value“. I never understand why wanted to print… an automobile database is a thing that need to be updated constantly and cannot be “finished” to be printed.

My parents encouraged my hobby, printed few pages for me, and promised that some day will help me publishing a book, but this never happened. There is possible that they lied me intending to keep me BUSY at computer to prevent me disturbing their busy lives (instead of allowing me to make friends and be busy with a social life, as I wanted).

My access to information was limited, I was collecting data from all sources that came in my hand, sometimes copying articles word by word: AutoCatalog from Auto Motor si Sport and AutoSpecial from ADAC (copying technical data and model advantages/disadvantages), a Catalog of used cars (copying model history), monthly car magazines, etc. I wanted to include car photos too, but I had photos just with few cars in computer, and no digital photo camera to take photos.

The resulted encyclopedia was a MESS, no standard format across various car models and impossible to make it complete, because with limited access to information I did not know how many other engine versions of same model does exist. My car encyclopedia can be compared with Wikipedia (it also do not have a standard format across various car models), but mine had more tables than text, was printer-friendly, but most importantly, was 1-person work!

I wrote in this way about 80 car models on 200 pages, during 2 years (2-4 pages per model).

Download SAMPLE: Car encyclopedia made in childhood, what is your opinion? Probably a total MESS!

Since 2003 I broke away from what my dad taught me, for future works I used 10pt font, titles with full-width colored background (similar with the current theme of website), optimized for on-screen display rather than printing. Also started working more in Excel than in Word.

In same 2001-2003 I also made in Excel some tables with formulas… like a case study for selected car models. Also a database dedicated to sport cars, but today I do not see them so important to worth maintaining them.

I started in 2005 a new Word file, currently sold as Car Models Encyclopedia.

AutoKatalog, one of most reliable car publications in the world, is published yearly in Germany since 1957 and in other ~20 European countries during history, including Romania starting from 1996 under name AutoCatalog.

Started making automobile database in Excel in 2003

Probably the most important project was the Excel table with all car model variants displaying only 7 technical specs fields, based only on AutoCatalog and AutoSpecial, for faster data entry and clean-looking, currently sold as Car Models & Engines Database. Started in 2003, an experiment with just 100 model versions, but in school vacation of 2004 I decided to expand it to all cars, the first final version launched in January 2005 had 3600 car models produced from mid-1990s to present, but was still incomplete in case of non-European brands or SUVs as I was not interested in them.

I constantly updated it with new models (thanks to yearly releases of AutoCatalog), I also added older models (with less technical details) thanks to the internet connection and Wikipedia, reached 6000 model versions from 50 brands in January 2007 and 7800 models from 57 brands in 2009 edition, being complete database for European market.

Another project was Car Models Plus in both Word and Excel, started in 2005. Similar with earlier Car Body List, one entry per body style, plus some data about car dimensions and engine range.

The Word file, currently sold as Car Models Encyclopedia, with one paragraph per body style, a mini-encyclopedia compared with what I done in 2001-2003, with just FEW info about each car, written in a standard format, later turned in one paragraph per model for all car body styles.

It had an Excel equivalent, currently sold as Car Models Database, an Excel table with one row per body style, to compare cars over time.

Considering less important, they did not had any final complete version until 2010, when it reached about 500 car models produced in Europe. I added foreign imports in Europe in 2012 and at end of year the Car Models Encyclopedia reached 1200+ models on 160 pages, 4-10 models per page, when I realized that nobody is buying Word documents so I put ON HOLD future updates of Car Models Encyclopedia, concentrating on Car Models Database in Excel only.

I connected to the Internet in 2005

Gained access to Wikipedia and this allowed me to improve car databases, especially by extending historical coverage of Car Models List & Timeline towards World War II.

For a short moment I resumed working at the encyclopedia in Word, by adding older cars, this time getting inspired from Wikipedia, translating articles into Romanian, often writing with my own words and not direct translation. Shortly I abandoned that encyclopedia along with 80% of projects started in childhood, considering them useless as better products are available on internet. But I kept maintaining the car databases in Excel, as they had NO equivalent on internet.

Local friends praised my work (although some blamed me that I waste my life doing useless things) and one said that people are willing to pay money for such things and asked me why I do not post the car encyclopedia on internet?

Publishing on website in 2011 and doing first sales in 2012

In 2009 I created my personal website http://teoalida.webs.com/ to publish my works primarily my other hobby AutoCAD design field (2D and 3D models of building and cars).

In November 2010 I did a FULL update for 6 of the car database files and added them to my personal-portfolio website, under URL http://teoalida.webs.com/cardatabase.htm. I translated all Romanian into English (took just 10 min to find/replace all car terms in Car Models Encyclopedia, but rewriting introduction for every file took few hours).

I never not sold anything on internet (for money), but in the same time I did not wanted to give Car Models & Engines Database for free so I offered only a sample, being undecided whenever to sell and how to sell. I was waiting for some feedback.

A failed start:

  • I had huge knowledge about cars but zero knowledge about marketing.
  • I did not know what kind of audience my website have, and what database formats customers would be looking for.
  • I believed that my products have same target like car magazines: buyers of new and used cars, plus hobbyist studying automobile industry like me, but surprisingly, I got contacted by companies looking for vehicle database for commercial use.
  • I did not got any feedback for about 1 year, I became worried that I done a very BIG USELESS database and is better to abandon the hobby.

First feedback were like this “not what I needed though keep up good work“… but what they need?
Only after discovering a software to chat with website visitors in January 2012, I started getting significant feedback, I realized that the database was GOOD, but the presentation was BAD. While the rest of my website is aimed to architecture students and house builders (web amateurs), the Car Database page was visited by highly-skilled people, company managers and webdesigners who probably did not liked my cheap-looking website hosted for free under subdomain.

Mistakes done until April 2012:

  • Presentation like a BOOK, author info on first page. The Excel spreadsheets saved in Legend & About me sheet, people had to do extra clicks to see the Database sheet to realize that there IS a vehicle database, they may have been lazy and though that there are just biographies.
  • No prices were displayed, as well no BUY NOW or FOR SALE buttons, no wonder why people would not understand if I am selling or what the hell is this website…
  • No preview screenshots, text-only page, bounce ratio 75%, after adding the screenshot it reduced to 40%.
  • Offering too much for free: 5 files offered complete and 1 file “The BIG Car Database” was offered as one-brand sample, waiting if someone will contact me, to negotiate a price… 2-3 people contacted me but I refused the deal once they said that are buying “for their websites”, I wasn’t sure what they are doing, though that are publishing my Excel file on their website and I refused to sell them complete database.
  • Most customers weren’t looking for that big database with engines, but for car external dimensions, which was offered FREE but contained only cars produced in Europe as it was done for the purpose of research car evolution in Europe, instead of complete list of all cars sold (imported) in European market. Other customers were even looking for a simple make/model list in XLS or CSV for web development, which was offered FREE in wrong format, DOC optimized for reading/printing.

So, I updated the European car dimensions database with worldwide cars in April 2012 and put on SALE for a small price, after several days I made the first sale to an insurance company. Since that moment I started the constant updating…

During 2012, almost every buyer praised the database but criticized website presentation and gave me suggestions.

A successful business, decisive changes done in November 2012:

  • I moved to paid hosting and domain www.teoalida.com.
  • WordPress platform and Simple eCommerce plugin that allow people to pay and download digital products automatically.
  • Car Models List .DOC converted in XLS and put for sale instead of being given free, becoming the best-seller (I was surprised, I did not knew that people are willing to pay even for a DATAbase without (technical) DATA).
  • I bought a collection of german AutoKatalog 1991-2013 from eBay (I paid them with my own money made from several sales during six months of 2012)… I updated with new models but also backward updating with classic cars, making the most comprehensive database of cars produced last 20 years…
I also made new databases, custom-made for individual customers, and the number of customers increased about 4 times.

Website redesigned in March 2013 further raised sales:

  • In late 2012 for the first time I googled and found that there are several other websites selling car databases, and got inspired to design my website in similar manner.
  • Installed a separate WordPress for Car Database section (URL remained the same), displaying on first page the products in grid layout with prices indicated, with buttons “Read more” going to individual pages of each database, also a FAQ section (as opposite of the previous single-page with a lot of rows of text and links to sample files, then “go in Store to buy full databases” (you can still see the old website design in http://teoalida.webs.com/cardatabase.htm).

Over time I was facing (and I am still facing) with the problem of insufficient feedback… LAZY people who, if they do not like a detail in the database, they go away instead of contacting me and requesting a change (probably many people think that I am just selling databases “as it is” instead of being the developer of database thus ready to make changes).

For example: Make | Model was originally on a single column, which pose no problem for a reader, but a programmer may not like it. As soon 1 customer bring this in attention, I separated Make | Model to 2 columns in December 2012. These changes helped to have in 2013 more sales per month than in entire 2012 year! If the first customers purchased it for reading in Excel, in 2013 about half of customers are webdesigners buying for importing CSV or SQL. By this way, when I moved to WordPress in 2012 I heard for first time about MySQL and realized that not all websites are made by static HTML as believed.

Expansion beyond European market – 2013

Car Models List included US automobile manufacturers, but did not included foreign cars imported in America, instead for Japanese manufacturers it included only models sold in Europe.

In January 2013, once a customer asked me for a database of cars sold in United States, with each year on separate row, I done an extensive research on Wikipedia and expanded my Car Models List making it complete for American market, with exact Model Years the car was sold in US.

Next project was to create a database of technical specs. I done a small experiment sourcing data from Edmunds website, writing it manually, but was overkill to do this for all 40,000+ car models. The salvation came from a customer who bought Singapore HDB Resale Flat Prices Database, he was a programmer so I told him to create a scraping script for Edmunds website, for FREE, in exchanging of giving FREE the database he purchased (refunded his purchase), but Edmunds is redesigned often, making his script obsolete.

Additional improvements that increased sale volume:

  • Changed plugin Simple eCommerce to Easy Digital Downloads (May 2015) and adding multiple price options to purchase small chunks such as 2000-present at smaller price, for people who do not need older cars 1945-present.
  • Removed product prices on home page and rearranging products (2015). Instead of putting the simplest and cheapest databases at top, I put the most detailed databases of Europe, America and India on 1st row. People had to click “more details” or image in order to see prices. While number of sales did not grew, monthly earnings grew because people went to purchase more expensive databases.
  • Wrote list of makes and list of columns included in each database (2015-2016), for people who are lazy to check this inside sample files (and also keywords for Google).
  • Added option to pay with credit card via 2checkout.com beside PayPal (September 2016).
  • Removed editing protection of sample Excel files (2016-2017). When you open a protected file in Microsoft Excel, you cannot edit it unless you go in Tools > Unprotect sheet and enter a password. But some non-Microsoft Office software ask user to enter password as soon you open it, or click “open read-only” which confuse visitors and they don’t open at all.

A new era: web scraping services – 2015

A new era started in August 2015 when I discovered www.import.io, a data scraping software which (at that times) was free (accounts made after April 2016 are limited to 500 pages unless you buy a paid plan). Although the software is free and theoretically you can scrap simple websites yourself, most people don’t have knowledge, or time to learn how to use it, so I am here to help you.

The first database made via web scraping was India Car Database, took about 1 week to figure out how to create it using import.io. The funny thing: one of the 3 indians who contacted me during that week and I informed what I am doing, though that I created Indian database because of his request, so requested me making additional databases of bikes too and other vehicles. For moment I refused, because I did not wanted to waste time on projects outside car field.

In November 2015 I recreated American Year-Make-Model-Trim-Specs allowing me to update it myself by using import.io extracting car specs from each URL although require to manually compile list of URLs of all cars, I also created other databases Singapore Condo Database (source: SingaporeExpats.com), Skyscrapers Database (source: Emporis.com).

Moreover, in November 2015 I allied with a programmer student from Pakistan to create scraping software for websites that are too complex for import.io.

Once I mastered scraping skills in 2016, I decided to offer freelance web scraping services, allowing me to serve people asking for specific data that I do not have, by quickly creating a new custom database scraping data from a website chosen at mutual agreement, even if just 1 person demand that particular data, once created I published database on website allowing future people to purchase ready-made (unless customer asked for a non-disclosure agreement).

Import.io turned to a paid service in April 2016 and suspended my free account in September 2016, I was ready to buy a paid plan although quite expensive. This gave idea to Pakistan programmer to create own universal scraping software in VB.NET for my own use, which turned to be faster and better than import.io, able to scrap multiple websites at same time without slowing down each other, allowing me to create even more databases and update them more often.

Other automobile data providers on internet do not even specify source of data, never mind of author info.
I am not sure if this About Me story will make you more willing to purchase a car database from me, or not, but…

…what is your opinion? Leave comments!

History

Database created in March 2017 (137 makes, 24379 models), for a customer who needed a vehicle database of light bulb types, he told me to scrap data from philipsautolighting.com, which took about 30 hours. Later I published database on website because other people were asking me for same thing.

Updated June 2017 (140 makes, 25682 models), after noticing that Philips added 2017 models.

Another customer asked me if I can scrap from xenonhids.com theoretically I can. As September 2018 neither Philips and XenonHids added 2018 models, but found another website that did added 2018 models: xenondepot.com.

Philips finally updated their website in October 2018, adding most 2018 models and only 13 2019 models, but as usual, it do not contain new cars as soon they are launched, but with a delay of few months. I also do not know how often Philips website will be updated in the future.

The website was also redesigned so I could not scrap it anymore with the standard “universal” scraper. I asked a programmer partner to make a custom scraper for it. Due to same reason, scraper ran much slower than before and took 150 hours to scrap all vehicles. Brands were reorganized, I got 133 brands and 37113 models, lights available (columns) also changed and now each light type can have multiple values.

In early 2019 Philips changed its domain name to https://www.automotivebulbfinder.com/philips/ but DID NOT updated their database as mid-2020, few customers suggested me scraping data from other websites and we choose www.sylvania-automotive.com in July 2020.

In October or November 2020 Philips website finally been updated with many 2019 and 2020 models, in January 2021 I asked programmer partner to update scraper to new domain name and after 7 days of continous scraping I posted new update on 30 January 2020.

Download file include both 2018 and 2021 updates, because I noticed that they deleted some makes and qualifiers, number of rows dropped to 33461.

Tired of lack of updates in Philips website, few customer suggested me scraping data from other websites and we choose www.sylvania-automotive.com. It was a headache to make a scraper for it, and following customer requirements (one column for each bulb type) it resulted in a database with 924 columns because light bulb labels vary a lot, there are many labels specific to one or few models only. I don’t know if is ideal format so your suggestions are welcome!

Custom database building

Website is visited by many people and businesses from different industries, thus is NOT possible to make everyone happy by offering a single vehicle database, or to predict what customers will visit me in the future and create suitable databases in advance.

If you think that these vehicle databases are stolen from somewhere and sold “as it is” like at other data providers, you are WRONG. As database developer and having over 20 years experience in researching car industry, plus high skills in data mining, I can customize already-made databases or create new databases according your requirements, for you and for future customers needing same thing.

Note: I am NOT a freelancer that you can hire anytime you want, I am a data provider creating USEFUL databases that I can sell via website to as many people is possible. Website traffic increased 10x from 2012 to 2018 and sales of ready-made projects grew accordingly so making custom projects is no longer required to finance my living, it became difficult to keep updates on-going for dozens databases, also website became overloaded with too many too similar databases thus new customers have trouble choosing right one to purchase. Due to this reason in 2018 I decided to STOP updates / abandon projects with less than 5 sales per year.

HDD crash of 1 October 2019 made me to put ON HOLD all custom projects requests, I went back on track in December 2019 and I am available again for customization existing databases, but I will start new projects ONLY IF at least 3 people demand certain database, and this in the spare time remained after updating high-selling databases. Do not expect me to delay update of a database with 100 active subscribers to create a custom database “just for you”.

Custom packages

I sell each database in several standard packages, for example Year-Make-Model-Trim-Specs have 3 column options: Trims, Basic Specs, Full Specs, and 2 rows options: all cars (1990-2021) and new cars only (2018-2021), making a total of 6 packages. But you can ask me to create a custom package if:

  • You need more than 2018-2021, but also don’t want to pay big price for 1990-2018. For example you need 2010-2021.
  • You need an additional column that is not included in Basic Specs package, but don’t want to pay big price of Full Specs package.
  • You need only SUVs, only trucks, or only vehicles made by General Motors (Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Geo, GMC, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Saturn). Useful for people who want to buy a car and my database may help them making a decision. Note: for a selection of makes the price per row will be twice of normal price, so if you choose few makes that exceed 50% of total rows in database you will no longer get discount.

Pricing: I charge twice price per row when selling a database with filtered makes or body type, so if number of rows is more than half of total rows, you won’t get cheaper price than buying full database.

Note: if you buy custom packages you will NOT be notified automatically when updates are available and you will not be able to download them. If you need updates you need to contact me and I will email you.

Customization of existing data

FREE customization: rearranging the existing data, deleting the “bonus” cars not sold in Europe, translating technical terms, etc. Do not lose a FREE offer like this FUNNY customer!

Paid customization: if new data need to be added, but if your idea is great and makes the database better thus can be sold to more people, price will be LOWER.

Databases were originally made as stand-alone products intended for visualization in Excel, I was not expecting that people buy for web development or other applications. Until december 2012 I had only 2 databases with specs for sale: Car Database LITE (renamed Car Models Database) and Car Database BIG (renamed Car Models & Engines Database), plus the Car Models List offered FREE in Word format because I was in doubt that someone will ever pay for a simple list of models without technical specs…

… without realizing that there is audience of people looking for a car database to integrate in a website, so they do not need technical specs, they need just a list of models… but in Excel rather than Word!

– As soon as one customer (from Turkey) told me this (30 December 2012), I offered conversion of Car Models List.DOC (offered FREE) to .XLS for €20 but he did not agreed to pay, however I DONE IT and put it for sale for other people, for $29.60 – 2960 models / 103 brands. Surprisingly, in just one month 4 people bought such XLS list of models without specs, outselling the other 2 products. Many thanks to anonymous from Turkey.

– One American did not liked the just-launched Car Models List.XLS and told me to recompile it by making separate row for each year (5 February 2013), after a little talk and confusion, I DONE IT!
This format of database was very WEIRD for me as European, but later I realized that this is the standard format for North America market so I put it on sale for everyone as Car Models List US and it became a best-seller! Later renamed to Year-Make-Model.
Now I think that this guy from one month ago wanted the same thing, but instead of explaining me, he quitted like an idiot.

– An insurance company intending to buy Car Models & Engines Database suggested to add two extra columns for make and model beside full model name. DONE! (December 2012), this boosted sales a lot.

– Someone who purchased Car Models & Engines Database complained that cannot filter the table by fuel type (January 2013). DONE! I added an extra column for Fuel type without charging extra cost (it was originally not included because any reader can realize which is gasoline and which diesel, by model name). Now I am sad by thinking that I lost potential buyers who were needing Fuel type column too, they went away instead of telling me to add it?

The BIGGEST job ever done by customer request (opposite of the original database made as personal interest), is the Car Tire Database. Initially I said NO to first customers, because would take 100 hours to enter tire size manually, but during 2013 I has been contacted by 4 customers demanding a Car Tire Database, so I decided to start adding tires in the Car Models Engines & Dimensions database. After completing 20% my website was hit by Google Penalty, lost 90% of traffic, lost interest in making new databases because potential of new customers was too low. Penalty ended in March 2014, traffic recovered.
A new customer wanted transmission, other customer wanted something else. I put Car tires on hold to decide what is best thing to do, and in mid-2014 I decided to add not just tires but ALL 40+ data fields from AutoKatalog car magazines.

I published a SAMPLE of the 40+ fields database, as marketing experiment, to see if anyone is interested in such big amount of data, and in 6 months found only 1 customer interested in 40+ columns (which in this case I would have abandoned the project) but numerous customers interested in specific data (mostly interested in tires, few in transmission, etc) encouraged me to continue. I launched for sale Car Models, Engines, Tires in May 2015 with 60% completion for tires, and finalized the 40+ fields database for 1990-present in October 2015, and put it on sale for 500 euro, a price at which I was not expecting many buyers, but I was wrong. Many people switched their choice to the bigger and more expensive database, and my income has been doubled.

There were many things that I could offer, but in early years I was not aware what I should offer due to people lazy to contact me and inform about their requirements

Creating totally new databases

A new era started in 2015, using web scraping software I can create new databases with minimum of effort, by writing scripts that visit a website at your choice, extract specific data and put it into an Excel database, in a matter of hours. See examples of projects done and their price.

Do not just tell me what data do you require and expect me to do research on the web to find that particular data. You need to provide URL of a website having required data and I will code a scraper that create a database with all data from the website you choose, which may be or may not be exactly the data you require.

Do not expect me to create databases with data that you cannot find public on internet, for example:

  • Do not think that I can compile a table with number of cars sold in your country, breakdown by model, if your government is not tracking sales and making them public on the internet. Data need to be public somewhere in order to extract it and put into a database.
  • Do not ask me to make database with dimensions of car lights, bumpers, windows, etc. Such dimensions are not provided in car manuals or anywhere in the web. If you sell such car parts, measuring yourself your own parts is the only solution.
  • One of the weirdest requests was from a manufacturer of mosquito nets for 4-door cars, requesting a database with rear door window dimensions. No car manufacturer provide such info that is not on general interest… it needs to be measured manually on cars of his own customers.
  • Do not ask for car owners database with name, address, email, phone number, insurance expiry date. Such database belongs to car dealerships and insurance companies and is NOT public, only their staff have access to it. However if you do a Google search “car owners database” you see at least 10 sites selling such personal data, all them from India, a country infamous for so-called email marketing, telemarketing and cold calling that us (westerns) we consider spamming. No wonder that 90% of people asking me for owner data were Indians. How these databases appeared on internet we do not know, probably corrupted employees tried to make extra money by selling via internet their company’s customer database. This is ILLEGAL and anyone distributing personal data risk to be fined or even jailed.

Used cars classifieds scraping

$
0
0

If you want a complete and accurate database of cars sold in your country, used cars classifieds websites are NOT a good place to source data from, because they are variable data, every day new cars are posted for sale while others become inactive, many car models are duplicated and some car models are missing because none is on sale today.

Quality databases with car specs can be made from websites collecting data from manufacturers, for example edmunds.com, parkers.co.uk, carwale.com, etc.

In 2016 someone asked me via this comment to scrap data from an used cars website and I initially said that is a stupidity to do this… I am sorry for this. Next year I noticed that there are several cases in which you need specifically to extract data from used cars listings, example:

  • You are doing an analysis of most popular car models, their average price, age, mileage, etc.
  • You are training an image recognition software, thus need thousands of amateur images labelled with car make and model. Used car classifieds websites are best option to get such images.
  • You want to start your own used cars website and can do this by copying listings from an existing website, with a link to original website so people can contact seller.

Someone asked me to provide a database of prices for used cars transactions. This is NOT possible because in most cases buyer and seller meet somewhere on street and negotiate price face to face, nobody knows at what price they agreed. There are also used cars dealers, but they are unlikely to share their sales records with third parties.

Websites scraped so far

Here you can buy SOME of the records I scraped in the past for various customers. If you want update (re-scraping) of any of below websites, or another website at your choice, please ask!

Note for telemarketers

Note for telemarketers who want email database or phone numbers to spam SMS ads: sorry but I may be not able to provide emails or phone numbers. All major classifieds websites use various anti-scraping features purposely to prevent users posting cars for sale to be spammed with unsolicited calls and emails.

For example phone numbers is generated to be displayed as an image, you need to click a button or solve a captcha to reveal seller phone number (certain anti-scraping features can be beaten, for example by using an OCR software, but this is difficult and I rather don’t bother doing this).

There may be some small websites that do not use any protection. Check yourself by right clicking page > view source, Ctrl+F and try to find phone number, if it is here, then I can easily scrap it.

I created this database in January 2017, for a customer who did not liked Year-Make-Model-Trim-Specs because it shows only 1 tire fitment for each car, he asked me to do web scraping from TireSize.com, which shows all tire sizes that each car is offered, standard equipment and optional tires.

TireSize is an easy to scrap website, having all data in HTML format, took about 3 minutes to scrap it with an online scraper, but each time I wanted to update database, I had to spent about 10 hours to manually copy-paste to fill model names on every row, to make database usable.

Number of sales failed to reach 10 per year and the 10 hours of manual work required each update made me to announce in late 2017 that will STOP updating this database and recommend customers to buy other databases like www.teoalida.com/cardatabase/american/ and www.teoalida.com/cardatabase/wheels-and-tires-size/

In April 2019 a customer contacting me for an unrelated project informed me that is possible to fill rows automatically (www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIKqeaFvltQ) and this allow me to revive the Tire Size database. I also made a scraper for tires by brand beside the tires by vehicle.

List of updates tires by vehicle:
33277 rows – January 2017, TireSize had cars up to model year 2016, meaning that it is lagging in updates for about 1 year.
35136 rows – July 2017, they added 2017 models during spring 2017 but is still lagging in updates because 2018 models are already on the market.
64 makes, 1361 models, 12315 years, 41014 trims – 13 April 2019, no longer lagging, 2020 models are already included.
65 makes, 1412 models, 12863 years, 43614 trims – 22 June 2020, sales been low and about 1 year passed without any customer asking for updates.
65 makes, 1413 models, 12864 years, 43618 trims – December 2020
65 makes, 1415 models, 12906 years, 43763 trims – 21 May 2021

List of updates tires by brand:
32 brands, 699 tire models, 18938 tire sizes – 13 April 2019
32 brands, 785 tire models, 21441 tire sizes – 22 June 2020

I made this database in August 2018 at request of an Indian company, who asked me to make databases for over 10 countries, for Malaysia we choose to scrap data from www.carbase.my, then in November 2018 after making Singapore one too I decided to publish both on website so anyone interested can purchase them. But now if I were to update all them it means a huge workload for me and small size of Malaysia country (low number of customers) do not justify effort to update it.

List of car makes

Makes with models included: Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW, Borgward, Chery, Chevrolet, Citroen, Ford, Haval, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Isuzu, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Lotus, Maserati, Maxus, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, MINI, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Perodua, Peugeot, Proton, Renault, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota, Volkswagen, Volvo.

Other makes that does appear on www.carbase.my/car-brands-malaysia but do not show any models: Aston Martin, Bentley, Bufori, Caterham, Chana, Ferrari, Fiat, Lamborghini, Mahindra, McLaren, Porsche, Rolls-Royce, Skoda, SsangYong, Tata.

List of updates

7 Aug 2018 – 49 makes, of which 34 have 328 models, 484 generations, 2204 variants, beta version.

30 May 2019 – 49 makes, of which 34 have 341 models, 523 generations, 2327 variants, added car images, added Statistics sheet and formulas to calculate completion coverage by column.

Poor sales made me to abandon this project and focus on Europe and America, I revived Malaysia in 2021.

8 May 2021 – 50 makes, of which 35 have 370 models, 619 generations, of which 618 have 2772 variants.

Last update is too old? Request update today! I just need to open scraper, click Start, wait 2h, click Save data, upload new file on my website and notify all past customers to re-download database.

Second American car database

I created “second American car database” in 2017, sourcing data from TheCarConnection.com, and updated until December 2019. Updates are technically still possible, but worthless because the source website is inconsistent and no longer have data for ALL cars.

People interested in new models can buy first American car database which I continue to update every 2 months.

61 car makes included

Acura, Alfa Romeo, AM General, Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Coda, Daewoo, Dodge, Eagle, Ferrari, FIAT, Fisker, Ford, Genesis, Geo, GMC, Honda, HUMMER, Hyundai, INFINITI, Isuzu, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Lamborghini, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Lotus, Maserati, Maybach, Mazda, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, Mercury, MINI, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Oldsmobile, Panoz, Plymouth, Pontiac, Porsche, Ram, Rolls-Royce, Saab, Saturn, Scion, smart, Subaru, Suzuki, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen, Volvo.

History

The first database I made for American market (Year-Make-Model-Trim-Specs offered since 2014) was missing some essential info, for example MSRP (manufacturer’s suggested retail price), in October 2017 one customer interested in MSRP suggested me to extract data from TheCarConnection.com, then in November 2017 another customer asked me for specific technical specs available in TheCarConnection so I included all specifications. After selling privately to 2 customers, both interested in 2017-2018 models only, I decided to scrap ALL data 1990-2018 and make database public for everyone, naming it “Second American car database”.

The URLs were not constant over time, TheCarConnection occasionally deleted cars by merging cars with similar specs. In mid-2019 they added an unique ID for each car, but they deleted nameplates discontinued before 2015 and the December 2019 database had 20% less records than previous one. I provided 2 files for June 2019 (58006 cars) and December 2019 (46107 cars) and some customers had trouble combining new file with older file to have ALL cars in 1 database.

Accuracy notes

Second American database is sold “as it is”, without corrections or additions, because any changes I do, will be lost at next update.

While specifications for each individual car are pretty accurate, filtering cars by class is troublesome due to multiple values with same meaning: “midsize car”, “midsize cars”, “mid-size cars”. Model hierarchy was slightly messed, for example Jetta is 1996-2005, 2009-2014, 2017-2018, New Jetta is 1999, Jetta Sedan 2002-2016, etc (they corrected this in mid-2019).

First American database, have nearly perfect accuracy, constant unique IDs and nothing is deleted. I also improved model hierarchy, corrected errors and expanded database with additional data not available on Edmunds. In May 2018 I made a more complex JSON scraper (instead of HTML) and added MSRP (for 2001-present cars) in first American database, which been outselling second American database 10 times, keeping updates on-going for 2 databases targeting same market became worthless.

The only advantage of second American database is MSRP for 1990-2000 models, gear ratios, dimensions for cargo area / trunk bed (length, width between wheel arches, height to roof), etc. But very few people are interested in these specs.

List of updates

In 2017 TheCarConnection was providing data for 1997-present models. As March 2018 they added 1996 models with specifications and also 1990-1995 models but only naming and MSRP, without specifications. I do not know if in the future, they will add specifications for pre-1996 cars too.

59 makes, 1136 models, 7224 model years, of which 6608 with specs, ? with trims, 46140 trims, as December 2017
61 makes, 1191 models, 8390 model years, of which 8074 with specs, 6644 with trims, 46804 trims, as 12 March 2018, published 18 March.
61 makes, 1210 models, 8651 model years, of which 8313 with specs (? full specs), 56363 trims (? full specs) as 20 September 2018.
61 makes, 1215 models, 8694 model years, of which 8313 with specs (? full specs), 56369 trims (? full specs) as 26 December 2018 (the source website did not added more specs in 3 months?)
61 makes, 1225 models, 8762 model years, of which 8439 with specs (7008 full specs), 57181 trims (49381 full specs) as 1 Feb 2019.
61 makes, 1229 models, 8790 model years, of which 8454 with specs (7023 full specs), 57312 trims (49512 full specs) as 28 March 2019.
61 makes, 1235 models, 8877 model years, of which 8547 with specs (7116 full specs), 58006 trims (50209 full specs) as 4 June 2019.

In mid-2019 TheCarConnection deleted pages of all model nameplates discontinued before 2015. They have 1990 Dodge Grand Caravan is still visible, because a new model with same name is still in production today, but 1990-2007 Dodge Caravan (non-Grand) disappeared because this nameplate is no longer available today. Strange decision!

I attempted to extract all cars and add 2019-2020 models over the 1990-2018 models from June 2019 release but I did not found enough new cars until 18 December when I found more 2020 models, but less 2018 and 2019 models than previous runs of September and December, so beside updating with new cars, they are also doing changes in old cars, deleting / merging 2 similar trims into one. Consequently, I provide 2 separate tables for June and December 2019 updates, until taking further decision.

521 models, 5629 model years, of which 5449 with specs, 44507 trims, as 16 Sep 2019.
525 models, 5696 model years, of which 5460 with specs, 44558 trims, as 07 Dec 2019.
554 models, 5785 model years, of which 5661 with specs, 46108 trims, as 15 Dec 2019.
46 makes, 538 models, 5786 model years, of which 5660 with specs, 46107 trims, as 24 Dec 2019. This was the LAST published update.

TheCarConnection does add new 2021, 2022, 2023 models, but no longer have ALL models. Scraping is technically still possible, and I did ran scraper to get number of models, without scraping each individual trim page to get specifications, because is worthless to publish updates that are missing old models.

38 makes, 472 models, 5510 model years, of which 5392 with specs, 47493 trims, as 30 May 2020. Exotic manufacturers were removed (Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce, etc).
38 makes, 476 models, 5544 model years, of which 5419 with specs, of with 5407 with 47724 trims, as 1 July 2020.
38 makes, 476 models, 5646 model years, of which 5532 with specs, of with 5522 with 49019 trims, as 18 October 2020.
39 makes, 454 models, 3632 model years, of which 3575 with specs, of with 3574 with 33711 trims, as 10 August 2022. Model years older than 2008 were removed.
37 makes, 443 models, 2122 model years, of which 2038 with specs, of with 2034 with 17251 trims, as 30 June 2023.

In April 2019 another customer asked me to do the same for Europe, he suggested sourcing data from vernicispray.co.uk.

Coverage: 1970-present (note: a couple of cars have wrong production years in this website). This website turned to be not so good, database having poor sales, and I realized why: it lacks HEX codes that indicate color (it is indicated via an image swatch). By end-2020 two more purchased it.

List of updates:
15 April 2019 – 42 makes, 1545 models, 58107 paint codes.
18 March 2022 – 50 makes, 1694 models, 59938 paint codes. I updated at request of one customer, but the source website added LazyLoad for images so I cannot scrap anymore image swatches.

(without NEW cars, database don’t require updates on regular basis, but I may do updates if I find errors or additional data that I omitted)

Description

90% people visiting my website are interested in new cars only or in cars produced last 10-20 years that are seen on roads. But a small number of people asked me specifically for a database of classic cars. And here is how I created this database, sourcing data from classiccardatabase.com.

Coverage:
Pre-war cars sold in United States, oldest car included is from 1899, but the bulk of cars are from 1910-1942 (few hundreds makes, 23362 models). Mostly US domestic manufacturers but there are few imports too like Rolls-Royce (before WW2 very few manufacturers were shipping cars over Atlantic Ocean).
Post-war cars from US domestic manufacturers, 1945-1976 (17 makes, 9522 models).

For newer cars I have American Year Make Model Trim Specs that cover 1990-present (63 makes, 60,000+ models, based on Edmunds.com). Unfortunately I was not able to find any source of data for 1977-1989 cars.

Description & history

Source of data: https://www.louis.eu/en/bike-database/

I created this database in November 2020 at request of one customer who wanted oil capacities for motorcycle’s, not available in Motorcycles Database that I was selling since 2016. Initially I didn’t wanted to publish on website because it would cannibalize sales of the above database (more expensive), but in January 2023 another customer was interested in same website for its images, so I updated database with few additional columns and published on website for 1st time to allow anyone to purchase it.

This database cover 100% of cars sold in Germany since 1950-1970s to present, and 95-99% of cars sold in any given country of Europe.

Last update: 24 May 2023, including 3194 cars launched 2022 and 1271 cars launched in 2023. Most models are being added 1-3 months in advance, some electric/hybrid models are added even a year before deliveries start.

Custom / partial database

Contact me for a quote if you want to buy custom selection of columns, makes, years, or body type. Custom subsets won’t let you download updates unless you ask me to send you updates, but are good for one-time use, for example to decide what used car to buy, or academic project.

Coverage

Passenger cars and commercial vehicles (LKW = Lastkraftwagen) up to 3.5 tons sold in Germany, the most diversified in the world. If a car is sold in Europe, it is sold in Germany too. I assume that this database cover 95-99% of cars sold in any given country of European Union and 90-95% of cars sold in United Kingdom, Russia, Turkey, etc.

Example of cars sold in (Eastern) Europe but not in Germany: old Dacia and Skoda models, some Lada models, Moskwitch, GAZ, UAZ, ZAZ, FSO, Zastava.

Oldest car included is Volkswagen Kafer / Beetle from 1946, most german brands are included since 1950s, other European brands since 1960s, Japanese brands since 1970s, American brands since 1990s. See SAMPLE file > Statistics Makes for number of models by brand and year.

New cars only include only rows with “model series end” empty, removing all models that ended production.

Electric/hybrid subset I added in 2019 once few customers told me that do not deal with internal combustion engines, but this seems to cause confusion now, some people thinks that first 6 packages are only for gasoline cars and contact me to ask if should buy 2 separate databases to get all cars. WRONG, original 6 packages contain ALL cars including electric ones.

103 car makes included

Germany: Aiways, ALPINA, ARI Motors, Audi, Auto Union, BMW, Borgward, DKW, e.GO Mobile, Elaris, Electric Brands, Ford, Glas, Maybach, Mercedes-Benz, MINI, NSU, Opel, Porsche, smart, Sono Motors, VW, VW Nutzfahrzeuge, Wiesmann; East Germany: Trabant, Wartburg; China: Brilliance, BYD, Maxus, NIO, ORA, Seres, WEY; Czech: Skoda; France: Aixam, Alpine, Bugatti, Citroen, DS Automobiles, Ineos, Ligier, Microcar, Peugeot, Renault; Italy: Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Casalini, Ferrari, Fiat, Lamborghini, Lancia, Maserati; Japan: Daihatsu, Datsun, Honda, Infiniti, Isuzu, Lexus, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota; Malaysia: Proton; Netherlands: DAF; Romania: Dacia; Russia: Lada; South Korea: Daewoo, Genesis, Hyundai, Hyundai Precision, KIA, SsangYong; Spain: CUPRA, SEAT; Sweden: Polestar, Saab, Volvo; Switzerland: Micro; Turkey: Togg; United Kingdom: Aston Martin, Bentley, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lotus, McLaren, MG, Morgan, Rolls-Royce, Rover, Talbot; United States: Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Fisker, Hummer, Jeep, Lucid, Tesla; Vietnam: VinFast; Yugoslavia: Yugo.

Originally I did not wanted to create additional databases for other European countries than United Kingdom and Germany, because people from all over Europe can buy German database and making more databases will increase effort to keep all them up-to-date without increasing number of sales (they will cannibalize sales each other), however in March 2020 someone insisted to make this Spain database because needed specifically car names in spanish language.

Source of data: motorflash.com. Oldest car included is from 1989 but database is 100% complete since 1995 onward.

List of updates

77 makes, 1222 models, 8606 years, 199094 versions – March 2020

The customer did not purchased database, citing pandemic restrictions, consequently project was abandoned, after a year he came back and purchased database in January 2021, so I done an update for him.

? makes, 1651 models, 9636 years, 255898 versions – 27 January 2022

Customer opposed selling this database on website, and asked me for more updates in 2021 and 2022 but refused to pay for them, not understanding that updates are FREE for 1 year only for databases published on website and purchased by other people. Neither me or customer noticed that database was missing cars having multiple body styles (the scraper was picking only 1st body style), I modified scraper in June 2022 to include all body styles.

Oil products database

Various customers asked me to create car oil databases, but there are over 10 oil brands, and making scripts to scrape data from each one is not viable. We should decide at 1 or 2. We made a scraper for Pennzoil in 2017 (contains only engine oil for cars sold in United States) and for Ravenol in 2021 (cover multiple oil products for cars sold in multiple countries).

Pennzoil

Coverage: cars sold in United States, with oil capacity in US Gallons. Earliest car is from 1980, but bulk of cars start at 1990s.

Ravenol

My partner Mohamed created this database in May 2021 for a customer who needed engine oil capacity only (even if I told him to include oil recommendations too because we may have other customers interested in that). My initial requirement was to have a column for each oil type (engine, differential, transmission, brakes, cooling, etc), but Mohamed thinks that is better to use separate rows for this instead of separate columns. We need feedback from customers about this. Initial release had 243 makes with 28776 engines (makes selling different models on different markets are counted separately). He upgraded scraper in August 2022.

252 makes, 3481 models, 31046 engines, 601431 oil products – 11 August 2022

Others / possible future projects

Fuchs SAMPLE.xlsx this website is more difficult to make scraper going through every car model.

Eurolub SAMPLE.xlsx similar with Ravenol, but having less rows (about 460,000).

History

First person who wanted oil database came in 2017, I used “universal” scraper to create a database from Pennzoil, and the customer did not replied anymore, nor purchased database, I abandoned project not published on website. I should have published it earlier, other people may have been interested and could do few extra sales. Pennzoil website has been redesigned meantime and could not be scraped anymore with the universal scraper.

In March 2019 another customer needing oil database provided me 5 possible websites to scrap data from. All them are difficult to scrap, cannot do them with my universal scraper so I need to pay a programmer for a custom scraper.

By June 2019 other 5 customers contacted me interested in oil database, but we argued regarding from which is the BEST website to source data from.

Despite that personally I don’t like Pennzoil, 3 people choose it, so my programmer partner made a custom scraper for Pennzoil in July 2019. This is not enough to satisfy all customers because Pennzoil have only cars sold in USA, so we need to scrap one of other sites too.

Option 1: https://www.pennzoil.com/en_us/oil-selector.html#iframe=L2RvL2VuX1VTL2VxdWlwbWVudC9jYWRpbGxhY18odXMpLzIwMTkvY3RzX2x1eHVyeV8yXzB0X3Z2dF9hd2RfY3RzX0VGdDhQb2FtbA – do I need to make 1 row for Standard and 1 row for Premium, or should be separate columns? some cars have 3 or 4 oil types indicated. Give me a suggestion because my programmer need exact template how you want data to be displayed. This may be slightly easier to scrap, however personally I DON’T like this website because it have only cars sold in USA and only engine oil.

Pennzoil have also a section for oil filters: https://www.pennzoil.com/en_us/filter-selector.html but car model hierarchy is different so will require 2 different custom scrapers which will produce 2 different databases that I CANNOT combine.

Option 2: https://www.amsoil.com/lookup/auto-and-light-truck/2013/audi/a4-quattro/2-0l-4-cyl-engine-code-cpma-5-flex-turbo/us-volume/#engine1 – this one have more info than just engine oil, but the way info is displayed on website makes difficult to put each piece of information in the right column.

Option 3: https://applications.castrol.com/oilselector/en_us/c/recommendation?vehicleType=cars-and-suvs&manufacturer=bmw&model=3-series-e46-(1998-2006)&modelType=325i-(132-kw)-(2002-2005) – Castrol have cars sold in Europe and USA and also truck and motorcycles, but many cars lack oil recommendation.

Option 4: http://fuchs-eu.lubricantadvisor.com/advice.aspx?lang=eng&country=ro&type=e5167c014c627820dd5f0ce57c9a0bdb – can someone check is this is a good and reliable website to source data from? Description

I made this database in July 2019 at request of an Indian company, who asked me to make databases for over 10 countries, and published it here to be purchased by other people needing same thing. But now if I were to update all them it means a huge workload for me and small size of South Africa country (low number of customers) do not justify effort to update it.

Source of data: www.cars.co.za (this a website that does shows specifications only for new cars, so when a model is no longer sold it is removed from database). Let me know if there is any other website that include specs for older cars as they were new (NOT a classified websites where cars available vary from day to day).

List of updates

44 brands, 364 models (295 unique), 2478 versions (1812 unique) – 6 July 2019
44 brands, 380 models (305 unique), 1715 versions – 25 February 2020
44 brands, 383 models (306 unique), 1703 versions – 4 May 2020
45 brands, 379 models (310 unique), 1645 versions – 4 May 2021, after exactly 1 year someone requested update.
44 brands, 373 models (303 unique), 1582 versions – 27 September 2021.
43 brands, 361 models (297 unique), 1508 versions – 12 March 2022.

In 2023 cars.co.za was redesigned, showing car specifications in JSON format so extracting data was no longer an simple job. I would need to pay a programmer for a custom scraper but little amount of data available and poor sales of South Africa car database did not encouraged me to continue this project.

In late 2024 or early 2025 specifications moved back to HTML format, allowing me to update database again.

53 brands, 381 models (323 unique), of which 320 with 1340 versions – 29 January 2025
